Title: Powering the A590 from the A500's PSU
Post by: Eco on July 23, 2004, 02:15:54 PM
Before going ahead with modifying my A590, has anyone here tried these (http://www.starnet.com.au/davem/overclock/A500HD.html) mods? It would be nice not to need the extra PSU for the A590.

Nah, haven't done any of them even though I have both controllers...I can't see the big problem with the A590 and the extra psu since the A590 powers up together with the A500.

On the other hand I can see the benefit on the GVP since you have to turn the psu for the hd on first, unless you want to break anything. Since my GVP psu has a defective case at this point, I will make the mod, unless someone will convince me that I'd better not :-)

I'm actually thinking of doing the mod because there is something wrong with my A590's power feed. The power to the HD is flaky, and keeps cutting off every now and then. I've tried to find the reason but it's not broken solder joints as I first suspected.

OK, if the PSU is broken that's a fairly good reason :-) Vesalia has a PSU for A590 for around 10 EURO (I think it was 10 EURO, might be wrong) if you prefer powering it through a PSU. At least that was what I got when I ordered my CD32 PSU.

You are sure that it's not a broken power cable to the hdd that is causing these problems? Afterall, these hacks are pretty easy even though you need to disassemble the whole controller on the A590. I will do mine next week when I get the time for it.

Its probably a good idea to go to my new site:   http://members.iinet.net.au/~davem2/amiga.html

The existing site is no longer being updated and may disappear soon.

There is a minor correction to the GVP modification on the new site as well.

As far as I can tell, the PSU of my A590 appears to be fine. I did suspect the power lead, and I have replaced the part that goes from the PSU to the A590 (including the connector). However, this did not affect the problem.

Thanks for the tip Dave, I'll be sure to check the new site out!  :-D
