Anyone know if AF actually gave away that £600 1260 board way back in 1996? (I think it was)
They ran a compo for the new board (may have been a Blizzard 1260...?), but I didn't ever read that it as won.
Nick Vietch was in charge at the time. Did AF renage on the deal or what? Anyone remember?
Cheers,
JaX

I believe Nick Vietch is doing LINUX FORMAT magazine now, and they occasionlay mention the Amiga............they were once supposed to release a CD with the Amiga version of Debian Linux or Red hat 68k..I went to the book store to see if it was out but I never saw it on the magazine cover?

I have Linux Format issue 8. On that covercd, there is an Amiga Linux distro from debian. It was a base version of Linux.

I don't remember the competition you mention, was it related to The
Killing Grounds?
I always wondered who was there to check up that competition prizes
were actually given to people, if it had been given away then they
would have definately wanted some publicity photos for their £600.
What a beautiful card the Blizzard 1260 was though, I imagine owning
one back in '96 would have been like having a 3Ghz P4 right now!
:-) :-o
I wonder where Ben Vost is these days... I always thought he looked
like Ming The Merciless.
:-D :-D :-D

I had installed Linux a few years ago, but erased it for AmigaOS 3.9.
If you want to install Linux on your Amiga, you need a MMU. Otherwise it doesn't install. Sometimes I had some problems with my memory to install Linux.

Up to a couple of years ago, maybe a bit more, Ben Vost was editor of 3D World magazine. He moved to that when all the Amiga mags disappeared. Same company I think (Future Publishing).
After a year or so with 3DW, he posted here or on another site that he was giving away all his Amiga stuff to anyone who wanted it. I had the impression he was leaving the UK.
As to AF's Blizzard 1260 compo, I believe the release of Alien Breed 3D (?) set the scene for it. I remember they wanted game designs based on a character called Reynolds, sole survivor of an alien attack.
I remember that bit 'cos I wrote a game scenario about what he did next. I still have it somewhere. I spent weeks designing aliens and weapons and like hundreds of other people, sent it in to AF hoping to win the Blizzard. It as worth a fortune at the time.
Then it all went quiet. Months passed and AF didn't utter a peep. Never did. What a swiz!

I found this: http://www.cgfocus.com/ArticleDetails.cfm?ArticleID=216
But it seems to be from 2001, so who knows...
-
That was probably from when he joined 3D world. I think he left around 2002? and left the country as well.
It is interesting how he said Amiga Format closed in 1999, when it was actually 2000, just a year before this article was published.

Yeah, Nick is the editor of Linux Format magazine. I really like the magazine - I live in the states and I shelled out for the subscription (few bucks). Anyhow I honestly see a reference to the Amiga platform in just about every issue - albeit sometimes minor.

I'm sure Mr. Vost is happy in retrospect that you weren't the one coming to his door to collect the stuff. :-P
