Hmm.
So I have this new LP, with a really bad "wowing" varying pitch during playback. On side A. Side B sounds fine.
It's not entirely flat but I have more warped vinyl that plays fine and the dips don't appear to correspond with the pitch changes. And wouldn't that affect both sides? In any event I don't have a clamp. :-(
Maybe a heavier table would be enough to pull the disc round at a more consistant speed?
Gah! This is frustrating. I'm going to put it near the bottom of the pile overnight and hope some miracle happens to fix it.

I've had much success with large thick books (like big unabridged dictionaries). Anyhow, hope it works out!

Is the disk slipping on the turntable somewhere? It's unlikely, but I guess if the vinyl is warped it's not in full contact with the rubber mat on the turntable and may be dragging somewhere?
However, you say side B sounds fine so it might be a manufacturing fault with the disk?

What you need is one of those laser stylus based turntables. I kid you not, they read the groove with a laser beam and can play warped, grimy, even broken disks (if the parts are arranged correctly in the tray). Apparently the sound is as clean as you can possibly get and you only hear what has been recorded (no artifacts from your needle arm)...
Unfortunately, they cost an arm and a leg :-(

Yeah, about £5000... they also have a tiny vacuum on the laser armature to removed dust...

It's a complete fallacy that CD audio is clean. Aliasing is detectable on the upper fringe of human hearing (for original signals of 22kHz+) and the dynamic range is not too great either. However, on most systems you'll never notice. On a state of the art setup (including the laser turntable), vinyl completely kicks CD's a*se...

I remember talking to Mike about these, pretty cool and I'd like to hear one in action. Although I seem to remember reading that they aren't all-analogue and there's some D/A conversion involved.

Well, it seems to be a few mm off-center. Am I right in thinking that towards the inside of the disc the music becomes increasingly squashed together to compensate for the shorter distance the needle is running with each spin? I guess that'd account for it.
This means contacting the guy who sold it to me, which is a case of big-time embarrassment and pride swallowing since he's (a) the singer and guitarist of the band and (b) my hero (well one of them - my other personal heroes to date include Vincent and some red-haired girl from California. If you'd like to be on my hero list, apply in writing.)

You forget that the Speed at which the Record rotates and the size of the stylus limits the highest frequency that can be recorded on Vinyl. Vinyl sux just as much as CDs do in the recorded quality, but they also suffer from far more physical problems (re this thread :-D) too...

And yes it is vastly superior to CD's, especially on a good system (Expensive Amp and Speakers).
-Edit- Mixing a song using 24bit @96Khz give you some much more headroom that CD-Audio that it makes life musch easier, similar to what it was like on Analog mixing boards.

Yep im with bloodline, vinyl sucks. I sell it. It's {bleep}. Those who praise vinyl have never had to file as much of the stuff as i have clearly.

Records make for better symphonic recordings by and large. The additional warmth that is often present makes it preferred for most audiophiles when dealing with certain recording situations.
In the end, all recording formats are limited, and vinyl and CD are both very good at different things.

audio is not compressed at the middle of a record, there is simply less room for information because the rotational speed doesn't change...or did I misunderstand your question?

What I meant was that since the outside of the disc moves a lot faster than the inside, that physically each second of audio occupies a shorter distance on the groove. So if you played the groove linear somehow, it would steadily increase in pitch. That would account for the varying pitch where the groove isn't concentric with the centre hole.
Um, that's if I'm right. My head hurts, I'm not sure, heh. :-)

Vinyl would be perfect if it were sealed in a container like a hard disk to keep it dust free... Analog recording beats digital sampling any day.
But who really cares anyway? If you're playing it as loud as you're supposed to, NO ONE can tell!

Oh, I get what you're talking about now.
Yes, record players use CAV (Constant Angular Velocity). The needle has to travel a greater distance at the edge than it does near the center, because of this the linear velocity is different depending on the location of the needle, hence the throughput is different too.
So YES, if a record is stamped off-center, it will sound all sorts of warbly-messed up because the throughput changes irregularly as the needle moves closer and farther away from the center, instead of smoothly closer the way the a properly centered record would.

don't forget the warmth issue though. Symphonic recordings usually sound better on a record no contest.

I find myself sitting on the fence really with the analogue/digital debate. I remember the first time I heard vinyl on a good system, my uncle had this big Pioneer system. This is when those standalone cabinet hi-fis were still the norm, and I'd grown up with the hype about CD's superiority. I just thought vinyl was supposed to sound like crap, and it blew me away.
So while I never became an audiophile (in fact the most time I get to listen to music these days is on the move... in mp3) it's still an interest. (My vinyl collection's pretty small though.)
This is why DVD-Audio (and SACD) interests me, although I can't help thinking, what if they had waited a little while longer and gone for an even higher resolution? I hope they left the door open for higher bitrates in those formats, anyway.
I don't like the encryption though.
I'm rambling and it's not very interesting, but I'm trying to talk about something other than politics and racism for a while. :-D

Well my current player's mp3-only. Just a cheap CD-based thing. But I have been eyeing up an iRiver (iPod clone) which supports Ogg. Maybe when I'm rich.
