Description: I recently got the enclosure in the form of a defunct SCSI tape drive. It’s now a 2.1GB SCSI HDD with a C= styled blanking plate. Cool huh? :-D (Thanks to Holley for the enclosure and Zac67 for the 1.6" HDD) Picture Stats: Views: 1494 Filesize: 287.57kB Height: 768 Width: 1024 Posted by: Hodgkinson at April 12, 2008, 04:02:16 PM Image Linking Codes

Hodgkinson Posts:1080 | April 15, 2008, 02:50:30 PM I've swapped the drive LED for a C= illumination LED (Had to take the drive to bits to mess with the jumpers) - Its now got one 10mm white LED shining in from below the C= The more the drive gets accessed, the brighter the C= (And most of the front of the HDD) glows! @rkauer: Thanks for the idea, however there's a chamfer around the back of plate slot and virtually no room to hide the LED's behind. BTW, Drive now partitioned, formatted and verified without errors! Hodgkinson. |
rkauer Posts:3263 | April 15, 2008, 06:04:32 AM Then a tip: use one (or two) LED facing the edge of the acrylic. This way you'll illuminate only the chicken lips! Light refraction is cool! 8-) |
Hodgkinson Posts:1080 | April 14, 2008, 08:50:01 AM In that case, have a look here on A.org for the huge chickenhead logo that was originally done for a T-Shirt. That’s the one I based mine on, with a few tweaks here and there (I had to measure it and draw it in manually to the design software because it didn’t support non-vector graphics!) As for the faceplate, that’s the only 1.6"x3.5" one I have (And it came with the bay)! They're a bit rare to find around these days. I suppose it could be re-sprayed, but that sounds like too much hassle, even for someone like me. Re the LED, I've got a bag full of 10mm white LEDs (And some 5mm UV ones too), so what I *might* try some day is to swap the HDD mounted led for one of those and angle it to shine onto the front of the HDD behind the logo. I’m weary about doing that sort of adjustment though, since in low light levels it might look ok, but in a brightly lit room, it would be difficult to tell whether the drives actually doing anything! I thought about permanently lighting the front of the drive, but trying to arrange LED’s as to produce a decent even light is particularly difficult. Hodgkinson. |
rkauer Posts:3263 | April 14, 2008, 04:52:53 AM Nah! If I have the image in .jpg format, I'll make a sticker with 3M (tm) auto-glue vinyl!:-D For the faceplate: why not substitute it from a "normal" one? It look too yellowished! The way it appears, it ruined the case. BTW: Why not a high-intensity led in a good-look colour inside the case for SCSI activity? |
Hodgkinson Posts:1080 | April 13, 2008, 12:28:29 PM That panel is an original part of the unit - Im not quite sure why that square is there either. Probably designed for some badge sometime. |
tokyoracer Posts:1590 | April 13, 2008, 11:01:10 AM That's really cool, I like it. Though the blank square looks a little odd but a re-spray would be even nicer. |
Hodgkinson Posts:1080 | April 13, 2008, 09:33:00 AM L---A---S---E---R  Acronyms aside, the front was made from clear acrylic, cut and etched with a laser cutter, just in the same way those custom "custom chip" heatsinks were made. If you could find something to open and print .dtd files, you’d be welcome to have the source file to base yours on. Hodgkinson. |
rkauer Posts:3263 | April 13, 2008, 06:05:53 AM Hello Hodg. From what kind of material do you made the transparent cover? How did you make the chicken lips? Paint? Acid? Sand jet? You gave an idea to add to my next to finished tower! Can I steal it? |
