ATX PSU Mod MKII
ATX PSU Mod MKII
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: After realising that my ATX PSU Mod project was built around a dangerous and unreliable PSU that is likely to put +12v down the +5v rail due to dodgy fake capacitors, I decided to start all over again :pissed:

This photo shows the new (Correction: Second hand) PSU insides without doing anything to it.

Specs:
Model: Macron Power MPT-300
Rating: 300W (+5v/+3.3v 160W) Rev:2.03 ATX
Features and benefits over the last PSU:
-Low noise temperature controlled fan
-Monitor pass-though connector (Though not switched - A relay should sort that out)
-Good build and soldering quality, all parts through-hole mounted. Decent chunky transformers and a well populated PCB.
-Good quality low-height heatsinks - Important to allow sufficient space for the extra PCB to be mounted above them.
-Being second hand, the PSU can be opened up and the internal layout checked for adequate space for the modifications without voiding any warranties.
-Better than the last PSU (Apart from far fewer reported problems on Google) in that the board is socketed to the fan and mains socket, allowing easy removal compared to the last PSU in which the mains connections were hard-wired into place.
-Worked last time it was used, and worked fine during testing, as opposed to the last PSU that was thrown out as being faulty (In hindsight the 8.5v +5v STBY rail probably had something to do with it ;-) ).

Initial problems:
-See all those faulty caps? They're going to have to be replaced...And to think the last PC was running with them...
-No PFC choke, not a major loss, and probably a benefit in that without it there is a lot more space in the case for the modifications.

I must say I didn't understand a word of the stuff you wrote above, nor what or why are you doing it... but as long as it makes you happy...

I thought about buying one...I actually had a look around...But the problem is finding one with features such as a temp controlled fan (What’s the point in having the fan running flat-out when the Amiga’s probably dragging less than 50W?), mains pass-through (Handy since I can arrange for the monitor to be switched as well), and all the necessary space inside to mount all the extras.

Unfortunately yanking the case off a new PSU to check how much space there is in there has a habit of voiding the warranty

Seems you should buy a good psu for your project although they may cost more than it taste. There has been so many garbage ATX psus in present years ..

It’s interesting that it’s only the 2200uF 10/16v output capacitors that have gone bad. All the other values capacitors appear to be perfectly fine. Probably something related to the electrolyte - Anyway, they've all now been swapped with low-ESR types savaged from other boards.

470uF on the mains side? I was sure they are used only in 400W+ PSUs!

For the bad out caps: this is not a sign of bad regulated PSU?

I use to buy and fix old peecee PSUs and re-build those myself.
