20 Column thermal printer
20 Column thermal printer
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: I picked this thermal printer up - Virtually brand new - From a radio rally for next to nothing, and I instantly started wondering whether I could connect it to my A1200D for printing off item lists for parts storage - The problem being that the printer has a single-sided 17 pin edge connector for the interface.

About a week later the MDF stand on which the printer can be seen was finished, complete with adaptor assembly to a standard printer Centronix connector.

What’s with the "Alarm reset" button?
The idea is that, due to this printer being 7-bit only, if an 8-bit character was ever sent to the printer, the printer may start churning out false information.
A small circuit consisting of 4 NAND gates detects when the /STROBE line and the 8th data line are active together, sets a latch circuit, and sounds the buzzer warning of a invalid character. The corresponding reset button resets the alarm.
...As hard as I try, I can't seem to even get an 8-bit character to be deliberately sent to the printer to test the alarm! All the characters appear to of already been substituted in the Amiga's OS for a similar character. Sigh  .

Btw, this printer is dated December 1984, thus predating the A1000 - And it’s still working!

Thanks for the comment ;-)

I actually thought about adding an acrylic cover over the top of the set-up, but I figured that it would be more hassle than its worth as it would obstruct changing and loading the paper drum...Its a real faff to get the paper to go into the printer head assembly...You need to get the angle just right for it to feed through :-)

Hodgkinson.

EDIT: It's now got a acrylic cover over the electronics :-D
