Fit an A1200 motherboard in an A600 case
Fit an A1200 motherboard in an A600 case
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: I couldn't fit my A1200 in the cupboard underneath my television so I decided to modify one into an A600 case!

Here is a bare picture of the offending article  :-)

It works well and is a recommended modification if you have the time....

Since the picture was taken I have also added a compact flash hard drive and internal cdrom.

Also, a modification to enable the connection of an A600 keyboard has been performed too.

It all fits in very nicely and is a pleasure to use........

Unfortunatly, there is no room for an Accelerator at present.

A possible solution to this is to make an adapter to turn the trapdoor connector 180 degrees but I'm still thinking about that obstacle  :idea:

This is a very nice idea and stunning work!

I spent a hell of a time just for tracing back half of the keyboard wires (I had the same idea in mind, but didn't had a glue if it could work) until I found this!

That's what I always wanted: a nice compact Amiga with the abilities of the A1200.

More details, please.

well doing this hack is definitely easier and in the realm of possibility than obtaining a 030 for the A600  :-P

It's very clever, i'm looking forward for the final result as I have always had a soft spot for the little 600. :)

@leirbag28

I look forward to seeing your project! Many thanks for your comments too. No need for the subway adapter though in this project... the mouse and joystick port are at the same point as would be on an a600 and are fully functional too. The internal CDROM and CF harddrive would possibly make the addition of a subway card difficult but it might be something to try :o). The most difficult part is the cutting of the board. Check out my other images that show one cutting path that works....... if you have the courage it might be something to do once you have finished your other project. My sentiments exactly about the a600 case. It is a great size :o) The only problem here is that of the lack of right hand space for an accelerator but I am pretty confident of solving that problem in the future.....

@Willow

 I would be terrified to do this........I though it was not possible, because I had thought about this idea years ago but thought I was being ridiculous.  I love the size of the A600 because I use my Amiga for VeeJaying and have to take it with me often. So the A600 size would make sence. (See My photo album of my Modified A600).  But I do know a solution for the Mouse if one has not yet reconnected the A1200 mouseports to the right part of the A600 case.  Just have a Subway USB card and add a USB mouse! :-)

it will work!

Man I hope I have the guts to do this type of hack. But afraid I dont have time and have already begun Hacking my A1200 for a new Paint job and lots of cool uncommon upgrades.  Pictures coming soon.

You got lucky!

It looks like, from your success, that all the tracks on the motherboard are visible from the outside.

Some modern PCB's (Mobile phones, maybe Mobo’s for example) can have 16 layers of tracks, making such a modification impossible.

Hi,

Go fot it! The motherboad will still function and until you reconnect the joystick ports you can still use the 'Amiga Cursor keys' to move the mouse under workbench to test the functionality of the other motherboard functions :o) . It's quite amazing how robust the a1200 motherboard is and how much it can stand up to. I will post the pictures for the extra two connections - from what I remember, they were one of the fire buttons connected directly to the ALICE chips...

Could be nice to have this info.

I have actually been playing with the idea of chopping of that bit of off the motherboard to make it smaller but never dared!

No problem. I've uploaded two pictures showing some preliminary investigations as well as the reconnect points for the joystick ports. One of the FIRE buttons for each port is soldered at quite a distance from the cut since it connects directly to on of the custom chips rather than buffer IC....... I will take some better pictures of the area where these two points are connected if anyone is interested in having a go at doing this modification.....

Can you post a close up of where you hacked off the first port?

If you look carefully at the bottom right you will see the board has been hacked and the two ports are there, in the original location of the A600!  Very nice.

But... what about the joystick port?  :-o
You know, the mouse port is fitted on a separate pcb, but the joy one is on the mainboard!
Have you cut it? What have you done to fit it there?  :-o

Does the A600 keyboard work on A1200's motherboards?

I see you should also adapt the PCMCIA window in according to the exact position of the port on A1200 mobo.

However... it looks like a little A600 "Frankenstein" AGA :lol:  but it is a quite interesting mod  :-)
