Description: I just got a new 8.1 megapixel digicam as an early XMas pressie from my brother :-D

Whilst not quite in the same league as Messers Adz & X-Ray, but as I know nothing whatsoever about photography, I was happy with it as a first attempt. The original image was just as sharp at 3296x2472 :-o

to go to the opposite end of the scale, I experimented with using my digital camera to take photographs through my telescope of the night sky.

the camera is a 4 tonne Kodak DC2100, the telescope is a 76mm F7.9 Maksutov Newtonian I bought in 1989.

Needless to say, in true Doctor Denzil Dexter manner, "The results were...disappointing !"

It was a hit in the 80s for Frankie Goes To Hollywood (but it had a dubious video)

 :-D

What?

Oh..
Ok....

You guys can magnify all you want, but if the composition is crap, I guess I'll have me a PPC 4000T and an A1  Seriously, there is no way I can't compete with an Electron Microscope or some fancy 64 slice scanner, my current macro setup is almost as old as I am.

Hehe

That was my plan too!  :-D
I don't think anyone can beat the old electron microscope. Looks like half of Adz's Amigas will go to you and the other half will go to me  :-P

On another note, they are installing a new 64 slice scanner at the hospital and I am just dying to see what resolution that baby can produce. 3D macros, anyone?

By December the guy with the most wins takes the other guys' Amigas.

Under your existing rules of engagement, I should point out that I have access to an electron microscope capable of immense magnification...

You did say any imaging technology that you didnae have tae pay tae use....

@ Karlos

I have the felling that you will be taking very good pics with that Hitachi, no problems there.

@ Adz & Karlos

Maybe we should have a Once-A-Month Macro competition. We can anonymise them and get our fellow Amigans to vote for the best one. Competition starts in January.

By December the guy with the most wins takes the other guys' Amigas.  :-P

@Adz

Cheers. Setting up the image was pretty ameteur as you've no doubt read. None of this proper lighting or tripod stuff, just double sided sticky tape and a white box

The camera is a Hitachi HDC-831ER, about which I've been able to find out very little online. It's your typical compact digital camera as far as I can see, 3x optical zoom, autofocus, etc.

I'm very happy with it, but I think I need practise in practical photography :-D

I never need to sharpen my neg scans, the optics of my film system are razor sharp. Perhaps a forum post to announce the creation of the A.org macro club might be in order? In addition, I can archive the collection on my pBase account with password protection so that only members can gain access to view the images.

No probs, we can say that sharpening of negs at scanning time is okay. That should be alright for dudes using film. But no Photoshop sharpening for anybody, ja?

@X-ray

Well, technically, any output from a digital camera, bar RAW, has already been sharpened by the image processor in the camera. We could specify that only camera JPGs can be used, not something I'd like to do, but it would provide a level playing field.

Now that we have a macro club, I propose the following rules be adhered to when submitting macro images:

Equipment:

1) The equipment must either be owned by the user, or the user must have free access to the equipment (not have to pay for the use of it). Borrowing is allowed.
2) Any equipment that produces an image is allowed. There is no limitation on what equipment can be used, or what combination of equipment, or how many steps there are in the imaging process.
3) The user must operate the equipment by himself.

Images:

1) Must be unaltered.
2) The only manipulations permissible are: reduce size, crop and rotate. If negatives are scanned, no sharpening filter must be applied.

Seems fair and simple to me. Allows guys to borrow cameras etc, so everyone can play.

Sharp, lots of detail and what appears to be balanced lighting, gets a thumbs up and a rubber stamp from me :-) Good job old bean, welcome to the club :-D

Click here to see what will be entering my collection very soon, then we'll see who the macro master is

Actually, I've been trying to think what else Amiga related I could macro, I've been thinking along the lines of keyboards, however, I'd have to spend a lot of time cleaning them first ;-)

Edit...Congrats on your new camera too, what brand/model is it?

Thanks, but whichever way you cut it, I am a noob when it comes to photography.

I did edit the image slightly, firstly to rotate it up straight and I replaced the background (for reasons that will become obvious) before scaling it down.

The (cropped) source image is here

I basically stuck the penny to the side of a white box (which is how the tiny fibres of fluff got stuck too) and stood the camera about 3cm away (measuring from the lens assembly) and that was it. Not exactly professional...

That is good, man, it is not noob!
Looks like Adz and I will be getting some serious competition from you.

I hereby support your entry into the Macro Madness club. All we need now is for the club chairman (Adz) to rubber stamp it  :-)
