IDE -> Compact Flash
IDE -> Compact Flash
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: I just replaced stock Amiga Technologies HDD (750MB manufactured by IDE) which was hot, noisy and painfully slow, with this IDE Compact Flash adapter and 1GB memory card.
A1200 works faster, without any noise and overheating...
I can recommend this sollution to everyone as CF requires less power as well!

What about speed? I'd really like to have such a thing in my amiga 4000 if it speeds up a bit the slow IDE device :-(

You sure it's a full 1GB card? There's a warning about fake cards on ebay that have been programmed to say they are 1gb but are really low megabytes.

In any case, if it's that low of shipping, they probably have an agent in UK unless UK and HK have some kind of cheap shipping deal.

Yes, indeed, it is a very, very nifty gadget.
I have one with female connector, and a 512MB card. Makes it fit like a genuine add-on circuit. No need to use the original IDE cable. This model can require some modification of the metal RF cage around the IDE-connector, to fit properly though.
There *are* versions with male connectors, which you plug onto the IDE-cable just as the original HDD. Haven't tried any of those yet, but they ought to be the same thing, just with the cable need.
BUT DO TAKE NOTE ON THE FOLLOWING:
These adapters do not work with
any kind of IDE splitter (like IDE-Fix, 4-Way Splitters etc). God knows why, since the adapter and/or Amiga will think it's a normal HDD, but it just will not work!

So, it's a must-have for the standard-Amiga user, who will not add extras like CD-ROM to their system. And as that, it's friggin awesome! =)

The only problem is the limited number of writes allowed. With regular filesystems this can be bad as they typically write the same block over and over again (rootblock).

True...  But I don't use my A1200 that much, and the cool factor (both in terms of less heat, and in terms of a totally silent computer) was too much for me to pass up.  And, honestly, how often does an Amiga really write to the disk?  I mean, we don't have swap and nasties like that.  Heck, once I set it up, I could probably toggle the drive to read-only and not really miss much.

I had exactly the same idea...

I picked mine up from eBay.

I can vouch that they arrive fairly quickly for being from Hong Kong.  I can't vouch for how well they work, though, since I've been busy and haven't torn open my A1200 yet.  :lol:
