Description: Many people say that in order to run datacomms software you have to use either MS-DOS or an Amiga since the interuppts on a PC can sometimes screw up data transfer. Benifits of a A1200 over MS-DOS inculde GUI OS, smaller physical size, no whirring fans, ability to run OS from solid state PCMCIA card....

Hodgkinson Posts:1080 | July 06, 2008, 09:40:44 AM It currently looks something like this. |
Hodgkinson Posts:1080 | March 28, 2008, 03:37:55 PM Yes :-D That's why I've since moved the set-up around a little (Actually ~ 90 degrees clockwise) and added a colour monitor since. The spec of that A1200D (Now my main Amiga) is currently on my sig, (And its' associated mods feature heavily in my photos) ... And that particular Amiga *might* end up at Sheffield Uni later this year... |

Hodgkinson Posts:1080 | April 06, 2007, 09:34:01 AM Thanks for the comments! Just to clarify things, I've since added a 2GB HDD some time ago, as well as installing networking capability with a 3C589 PCMCIA network card. I've also added RAM/RTC expansion board, and I’m considering upgrading the old black and white monitor (Yes, B&W! 13") to a small colour monitor some time in the future for use with a potential SSTV (Slow scan TV) set-up. The tricky bit is how to fit such a monitor onto the bench. Hodgkinson. |

leirbag28 Posts:1793 ![]() | September 28, 2006, 11:28:38 PM @Hodgkinson I never liked the size of the A1200 or the look of it much........highly preferring the A600......................but your A1200 looks excellent there! I dont know why? it must be because it is infront of that Ugly yellow Monitor.....hence the A1200 Shines :-D I like your A1200 in this pic. it was taken at a good angle I guess. |
Hodgkinson Posts:1080 | August 25, 2006, 11:07:44 AM The software running in the picture is AmiCOM, which allows data communications on the radio via a sutible modem / TNC unit, in my case at 1200 Baud. It allows you to talk to other radio amateurs, in a way similar to messenger, as well as the ability to access bulletin boards and download files. |
orange5 Posts:19 ![]() | August 24, 2006, 02:55:13 PM hello. in answer to your question, yes the technology is similar to irc, however the two technologies (irlp and echolink)differ in the way they communicate. with irlp or internet radio linking project, you can dial a 4 digit dtmf tone to access a node anywhere on the planet, with echolink you have to go through the echolink software to communicate with anyone. all this technology available to licensed radio amateurs do's me 'ead in sometimes, but it is quite amazing most of the time. for more info google irlp and/or echolink, it will tell you all you need to know. regards Lee. :-) |

Hodgkinson Posts:1080 | August 24, 2006, 10:35:48 AM Ah well. Well like I said...The Amiga still has other advantages for my set-up... |
xeron Posts:2533 | August 23, 2006, 07:02:02 PM Nice to see you using your A1200, but that windows can't reliably receive over serial is a myth these days, i'm afraid (except using serial over USB which suuucks), but for onboard serial, I use Tera Term Pro heavily at work in situations where missing chars are a REAL pain, and it is absolutely reliable (this is receiving and capturing constant data at 115200 baud for over 24 hours at a time). |
orange5 Posts:19 ![]() | August 23, 2006, 02:44:11 PM hello! me too, my call sign is M3LVW. give us a shout in the kitchen (7.089 lsb) and you will usually find me there. regards Lee :-D |
Hodgkinson Posts:1080 | August 23, 2006, 02:10:10 PM Toooooo right. Callsign M3RSH, should me 2E0RSH in a matter of weeks after the intermediate exam. The A1200 + AmiCOM software is running via a Baycom style modem into a TR-7800 2m transiever. I can hook up to GB7NND (A BBS) in the local town whenever I wish on 144.850Mhz |
