A4000D battery damage to U177
A4000D battery damage to U177
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: I thought I had caught the battery in time, because it was just a little fuzzy. I cleaned the area good, and to the naked eye everything looks okay. The soldering job of the replacement even looked good. The camera is not as forgiving, however. The soldering job doesn't look so great. But more alarming is the damage to U177 (the clock "latch") to the left of the red wire. You can faintly still see a greenish tinge and the tracks do not look as nice as in other areas of the board. All the RTC circuit connections tested okay, and when the Amiga is powered up the latch shows 4.88v across it. The RTC chip (U178) shows 4.99v across with the power on, and 3.85v with the power off from the replacement batteries (3xAAA rechargables). Still, the Amiga complains that no RTC clock is found. I suspect U177 is to blame. Any suggestions?

Hmmm. Sometimes repair of open-circuit tracks is possible if you have the circuit diagram and you can identify a problem track - It's then just a case of soldering a wire across the open circuit section, probably directly from one IC to another; albeit with care to make sure you don't accidentally short two tracks out – Checking with a ohms meter is not enough – You really do have to be sure where the tracks go to before you solder any links in.

As for U117, you could try re-soldering the contacts; but this should really be done by  someone with experience in soldering SMD devices and with a very fine soldering iron. There might be a bad contact in there somewhere.

EDIT: Ah, you already checked the tracks ;-) (Still might be a bad contact though) Whats all that stuff around those vias above C192?

Hodgkinson.
