Description: Here is a closeup photo of the inside of CU_AMiGA's Amiga 1200. As you can see there is an IDE 2.5" (laptop) IBM 4G Hard Drive in there. IBM Hard Drives represent the best quality in Hardware, so i figured that i couldn't go wrong in buying an IBM Hard Drive. The Hard Drive itself is very reliable and runs very cool inside the Amiga 1200 Desktop - which is very important, as many of my adoring fans will know. The Hard Drive itself is "secured" onto the keyboard bracket via 2 elastic bands. I wanted to use a 4G Hard Drive, because i didn't want to go through all that 4G barrier crap that happens with the Amiga OS. Plus, i couldn't really install a Power Flyer inside due to space and air cooling reasons. What i wanted here with my Amiga 1200 Desktop, is a nice easy, easy to use, basic system, that would still be capable of todays tasks (ie: MP3 Playback or Word Porcessing, etc). A size 2.5" (laptop) Hard Drive is very useful for Desktop Amiga 1200's, as not only does it take up little space, but also takes up very little power (unlike the 3.5" Hard Drives). This Hard Drive has Smart File System installed, as the orignal Fast File System that came with the Amiga OS is crap and buggy in my opinion. Other to the side is the Floppy Disk Drive. This operates just fine, but the problem i have is that i am missing the metal bracket that keeps the Floppy Disk Drive in place (see bottom of the Floppy Disk Drive to see it missing). Luckily, it isn't too much of a problem, i have bolted the Floppy Disk Drive into place at an angle, so it is secure at that angle - thus causing the disks inserted not to get jammed inside the Amiga 1200 Desktop. However, if anyone has any metal brackets spare, then please email or PM me here at Amiga.org. Just below the Floppy Disk Drive is the Blizzard 1260, with the single sided 64MB simm installed. From this photo, you can see the trapdoor has no problem in shutting due to the slim size and great designing of the Blizzard 1260 and the simm. To power up this great Amiga 1200 system, i use an old Amiga 500 PSU (one os the older 1st rev i believe as well). Thanks to the energy effiency of the 2.5" (laptop) IBM Hard Drive and the Blizzard 1260 - as these two doesn't use much power as some configurations of Hard Drives and Accelerators - the Amiga 500 PSU is just about capable enough to power up the whole system, with no crashes either. My laptop came with one... lasted 6 months... changed to a replacement which has now started the normal deathstar click of doom! Uho! Time to backup i think!! |

Doppie1200 Posts:497 ![]() | July 07, 2005, 10:06:39 PM My apologies, but those rubber bands are not done! When they turn brittle you are nowere with your doomy quality harddrive. Drill proper holes in the bracket and secure the drive as intentioned. Or hotglue the drive to the bracket for all I care. But this looks like a temporary solution. Take care. |
Karlos Posts:16878 | June 25, 2005, 12:25:07 PM Wow, I almost forgot what an unhacked A1200 innards looked like :-D Regarding the comments about IBM drives, you obviously never had the pleasure of using their deskstar series ;-) Of course, all major drive manufacturers have released a dud or two. Seagate, Maxtor, IBM, Fujitsu... That said, the award to hardest working error free drive goes to my own A1200D's slimline 3.5 inch Seagate Medallist. I got it 12 years ago and it still works flawlessy after pretty much daily use. Now that I said that, it will die tomorrow. Just wait and see ;-) |
