Installed MorphOS on my eMac, Now What?
« on: June 22, 2010, 04:59:23 PM »
Very exciting day for me, the eMac came in the mail, MorphOS installed within a few minutes, and it boots in no time at all.

Now my first question, is do I just hold down power to shut down, or is there something I should click on first?

I noticed that my installation looks like a default 3.1 install with no start bar or any of that junk added, so I just want to make sure that I'm shutting down correctly to start with.

Secondly, how do I add an ICON bar or something to that effect for easy access to my apps.

The one in this pic will do, unless someone can advice a better option, I.E. if there is something like ToolsDaemon.

Thankx!

The recommended way is to choose "Shut Down..." from the Ambient menu.

Ambient menu: Objects / Panels / New...
Then click right mouse button on top of the panel and choose "Add to panel...". You can then drag'n'drop panelitems into the panel (you probably want to add buttons, and maybe spacers). Once you have desired number of buttons you can drag'n'drop the application icons into the buttons.

There are various properties for the panel you can edit by choosing right mouse button over the panel and selecting "Properties...". Once you're happy with your panel you can choose to change it to "Locked" state so that you don't modify the panel by accident. You can have multiple panels if you wish.

Check jPV's MorphOS 2 review for some cool Ambient stuff. :)

For software:

http://morphos-files.net/ and http://morphos.lukysoft.cz/en/ contain nice archives of various software to install. You can also check http://mos.aminet.net/

If you're into application development you should install the MorphOS SDK available from the MorphOS downloads.

Install this ->  http://www.encore-games.com/fortis_morphos.html

Just a quick note: Fortis requires powersdl v14 installed: http://aminet.net/package/util/libs/powersdl

@XDelusion

hi! It would be a good idea to try out MPlayer http://fabportnawak.free.fr   in that url you will also find updated versions of OWB and its flash plugin & user scripts...

Ambient has toolsdaemon functionality built in although ToolsPrefs doesn't come as standard. There are 3rd party GUIs to build its preferences like CRABUM http://homepage.alice.de/thomasigracki/ you can also use ToolsPrefs and later run the ARexx script supplied with MorphOS to import ToolsDaemon preferences.

For games:
http://kiero.binaryriot.org/
http://bigfoot.morphos-team.net/files/

3d titler: http://amigazeux.net/titler/

For MSN Polyglot is nice: http://polymere.free.fr/polyglot_en.html and SabreMSN (OS3 version) also runs fine.

You can use mldonkey to download stuff.

Take a look at morphzone too.

Thankx all, but first things first....

...only my Mac mouse works thus far, therefore only 1 button.

My 2 Button mouse detects, but only moves when booting into MorphOS off the CD.

It would not work during the install, nor has it worked since. Again it only works when booting into MorphOS from CD. Ironically if I boot MorphOS off CD, the Mac Mouse will detect but not work. So the problem reverses itself.

Try another mouse. I use a generic 2 button PC mouse with my eMac and it works fine, both buttons.

Absolutely, try another mouse. When I bought my Powermac I thought I needed an Apple mouse. After finding that my two button wheeled usb mouse worked with the Mac, I sold the Apple mouse on Ebay (got $8 for it too).

That said, is there an OS3 skin for MorphOS?

Yes, although I can't remember where I got it. Either MorphOS-Files.net or pegasosforum.de.

IIRC there was an OS1.3 one :-) There are also some OS4.0 ones and I can't remember any AmigaOS3.x skin but it's possible it exists.

Thanks, Crumb. I'm still getting used to my SamFlex on one desk and my Craigslist eMac with newly registered MOS on the other, and I am very glad to learn about CRABUM and the ToolsDaemon functionality. I've always used ToosDaemon on my Amigas and never cared for docks, program launchers or whatever on the Workbench.

I'm configuring my menus now and will work on making my drawer icons not look like folders next. Talk about mixed-up interface metaphors -- the menu still says "new drawer" after all! To really feel at home I'd need draggable screens, but otherwise I'm pretty pleased with MOS on the eMac.

XDelusion,

Almost forgot to say... Congratulations on your eMac. I just found out these little babies will unofficially support 2GB of memory, so I'm after a couple of 1GM modules to try.
