A dual-boot option is a bless!!  Two most beautiful systems on a single machine.  An important date in computing OS history.

@ Flashlab

Yes, any G4 will do. But only the 1.5 GHz version has 64MB VRAM.

I have just downloaded 2.4 and will be showing it at this weekend's AmiWest 2009 Show in Sacramento, CA.

That is just one MORE reason to attend AmiWest 2009.  The Amiga Game Competition that I will be running during the show is another great reason to come and possibly win some prizes.

Hope to see some of you at AmiWest 2009.  I will be there on Friday through Sunday.

Nice! Thanks, Team!

I can confirm that it doesn't serendipitously work on a 1.67GHz PowerBook G4 (hangs at Quark/OpenFirmware). Anyone got a spare iBook G4 they can try it on?

I'd really like to know what future developments are planned for Mac support. My Pegasos is fried and I'm wondering if I should try to get it fixed, or invest in a Mac. I'm not thrilled about the prospect of a downgrade to 64MB of video RAM (or less), so if PowerBook support is in the cards... that'd be cool.

The Mac Mini has the Radeon video card whilst other G4 Macs have Nvidea's.  That's not the only difference but it's likely to be a significant one given that there is no mention of Nvidia support on Morphos website.

No, the 1.42GHz eMac has an ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card in it which is not supported by MorphOS2.4, AFAIK.

The 1.25GHz eMac does appear to have a supported ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card though, so maybe someone can test an installation of MorphOS2.4 on one of those and report back their results.

Just in case anyone is interested I'm going to be supplying checked/cleaned (inside & out) mac mini's with MorphOS2.4 & OS X dual boot ready installed.  I'm doing this as a sort of service to the community so I'm not trying to make a profit just cover my costs.
Next week I should have three 1.25ghz models ready to go at about £150 each.  All have original boxes, manuals etc. and two of them even have the extra outer box as well.

Watch now the prices of mac mini's on ebay will skyrocket I bet!

No other Apple hardware than Mini will load MorphOS by chance with this release. AFAIK during Boot the hardware version is checked, if it is not a Mini, boot gets abandoned.

Yeah, I don't really get why it's so difficult for people to understand that this release is for Mac Mini? :-?

Of course, nothing wrong with a healthy hack&try attitude (it *could* work ;-)), but when it says "This release is for Mac Mini" I think it's fair to expect that:
1. It works on all Mac Minis.
2. It doesn't work on other Mac's than the Minis.

Anyways, congratulations to the MorphOS team for this release (and to every Amiga NG enthusiast that wants the cheapest and most powerful Amiga ever!)

:-)

I think people don't realise how much Macs differ from one another, each change in form makes a change in hardware.  There were at least three video card companies in use in Macs, ATI, NVidea and Radeon.  Mac Minis were Radeon.  If you plug a Radeon card into another Mac the graphics might work but what about the rest of the hardware.?  Best to stay with Mac Minis, there's still far more of them than there are SAM boards and at a far better price.  I just have to be patient and wait for the weekend, my Mac Minis in his house and he's not that close that I can just run over in the evening...

Well, at last... I've never abandoned my trusty Amiga 1200, but now I've got a new Amiga OS for my hardware.

I have been waiting since 2005 for this to happen: I got my Mac Mini G4 when it was about to be abandoned by apple in favor of the Intel one, only dreaming of the rumors of Amiga OS in this machine.

Now, I can go back home: Amiga OS (what I experienced of MorphOS in the past was perfect Amiga for me) as my main home OS.

I'm registering without any kind of doubt. It has been written in stone :D

Congratulations, MOS team! (and specially Piru, who honors us with his presence and participation ins this forum)

This news doesn't really make me happy.
I traded my G4 mac mini for a mountain bike this past spring, and the bike got stolen within a month.

I hope they do a G3 release at some point.  I find G3 iMacs on the curb on a weekly basis, and they have ATI GPUs.

I am not a spokeperson for the MorphOS develpopment team, but IMO adding support G3 hardware would be detrimental for MorphOS since many people will find it's performance lacking and would blame MorphOS when the truth is that there is a limit of what you can do with old hardware.

G3 iMacs had an ATI GPU, but it was a 16MB graphics unit, or worse, an 8MB one, so no go for MorphOS, unfortunately.  IIRC a Rage 128, some with DVD hardware decoder option.

Congratulations to the MorphOS team for, once again, actually releasing a product that they said they would, and in a timely fashion at that!!

However G4 iBook should be very close in hardware spec to a mini, since the Mini was in fact a laptop chipset crammed into that tiny case, and it did borrow heavily from their (cheaper) iBook G4 line, versus the faster Powerbook chipsets.  So in terms of hardware, the G4 macbook and mac Mini should be very similar indeed.  My trusty G3 Wall Street Powerbook needs upgrade, I'd pop for a G4 iBook regardless, but MorphOS would be tasty indeed on a laptop :-)

I think we need more native software more than we need more or faster hardware.  Just my opinion.

Truth be said, new hardware was required, the kind you can buy with a good price/performance ratio, which sadly Efika never was. Agreed, the mac mini is not really new hardware, but it does has a very nice price/performance ratio and you can easily/cheaply get upgrades for it. If enough people (ex-amiga owners, techies and whatnot) jump into the MorphOS bandwagon then maybe (just maybe) there might be new applications, be it open or closed source but there will be no new software if the number of users does nor increase

I guess I should have prefaced my earlier comment with "Now that we have the MorphOS port to the MacMini ......."  If you look at the post I was quoting, you will see it mentions that the MacMini is just a stop-gap measure and that the poster think MOS needs to go to x86 ASAP.  Hence my comment about needing more and better software instead of faster hardware.

I totally agree that the Efika is under powered, but it was at a great price point and if it only had a bit more RAM, it would still be a very usable MorphOS machine.

Well after getting ZERO sleep last night, I am on my 4th or 6th attempt to install MorphOS2.4 on my G4 MacMini.  I almost succeeded a couple of times, but the installer froze and it appears that I have lost all of my previous MacOSX settings and programs that originally came on my used MacMini.

I am watching this latest install attempt and as it is copying all the files to DH1: I see at the top of the screen an error message that my 60mb Boot: partition is too small and that 169mb size is required???

The install completed and I have successfully booted to MorphOS2.4 from my hard drive, so I guess that error message was inaccurate.

Downloading fonts for Sputnik seems to be working and everything is very snappy which is a welcome sight compared to MacOSX.  Sputnik seems to be taking a very long time to open and appears to have frozen.  After waiting for several minutes, I have been trying to close the window or even get to the Ambient menus so I can restart and nothing responds.  I have an hourglass pointer when it is over the Sputnik folder window, and returns to a regular pointer outside that window, but nothing responds to any mouse clicks anymore so I must resort to the power button on the MacMini to restart.

Edit:  Rebooted and loaded OWB up.  All appears to be working well now and I just left my first message using my MacMini running MOS2.4.  Hooray!  This Mini really scoots running MOS2.4.

The message refers to the first partition being too small for the main bulk of the MorphOS installation. The first 60MB partition (named Boot) is just for the boot.img files (and a few others).

The massage is accurate in this context, and is noted in Jacadcaps installation guide.

Sorry to hear that you lost your OSX installation :-(

I'm about to buy a mac mini, but before that I would like to ask if there's, by any chance, the possibility of supporting Power Mac's G4?
I have a Quicksilver G4 that's now with a Geforce 4 4600, but It should be easy getting a Radeon for it. It's lying on the drawer, but I keep it because it's (in my opinion) the prettiest case ever. I would LOVE to make it my new MIG! :)

Title: Re: MorphOS 2.4 for Mac Mini Released

No announcements about any other Mac models have been made (yet), but one of the team members did hint that some progress had been made by him on his own G4 Mac laptop.  I can't remember if it was a PowerBook, or an iBook.  Even though it would seem logical to port to other G4 Mac models, the Dev Team might have completely different plans for the future, or they may find that some of the G4 Mac models are more difficult to crack and complete a port to than the MacMini was.  I would imagine that much of their time in the near future will be spent still working on improvements for the MacMini release, as it could probably still use some improvements and there are still missing drivers for some of the MacMini's hardware add-ons too.

Personally, I am hoping for a port to the G4 PowerBook's, as I would love to have a fast MorphOS laptop.

The ibook/powerbook version of MorphOS will make a lot of people really happy!
I know my old ibook had the almost same specs as this mini.

Efika has 128 meg of ram whilst minimig has 2 or 4 meg, original Amigas topped out at 8 or 9 meg  without  accelerator card, and even most of the accelerator cpu cards or the sought-after DKB memory card held 128 meg  MAX!

So one might think 128 meg on the efika should have been enough!

For some apps it will be, but once you launch things like OWB those 128MB are gone fairly quick.

I just successfully bid on a Mac Mini G4 on eBay.
I just finished downloading MorphOS 2.4.
As a current owner and prior user of classic Amigas, I've followed the torrid tale of Amiga since first using an Amiga 500 in 1988. I upgraded when the 1200 came out.  I even bought a few A4000's off eBay over the past several years, cobbling together a decent one from parts of the three I own. But I find myself rarely using it these days, worrying that it might tear up with too much use, repair being expensive nowadays even if you can find someone to work on it. So it sits in a corner, getting dusty.
I never gave much consideration to upgrade to AmigaOS 4 because the price of entry I thought way too expensive for hardware that would be considered several years out of date.  The entry price on the Mac Mini is one fourth to one third of the cost of a Sam, and it includes MacOS X in the price ( my first Mac!).  MorphOS is a free fully functioning demo the allows me to try the OS before buying.  Win Win for me. Even after the cost of a MorphOS key is thrown in, the cost to me is less than half of a current AOS 4.1 platform, with more modern hardware to boot!

I have some experience having devices getting dusty, and believe me, not using them you'll not save them from getting wasted, on the opposite, they will get ruined faster, i do recommend a moderate use, to keep their circuits in good shape.

Been looking at the MM's on EBay myself... But what exactly is MorphOS? I've read the website and I can't tell for sure. Is it a variant of the Amiga OS in some way?

It's written by people who like(d) AmigaOS.

...and it's expensive.  It'll cost you more than the MacMini.

MacMini G4 : 250/400 E (depending cpu speed, HDD, CD or DVD or DvdRW drive...)
Mos 2.4 : 150E ...

Like Atari Jaguar's add said " do your maths...!!"

Well, one can use it for free for half an hour, then the system slows down. After rebooting, you'll have another 30 minutes and so on.

It is written by guys that were trying to negotiate with Amiga Inc., or who ever was the owner at the time they started work on MorphOS, so that it would have become the next version of AmigaOS, if negotiations had not broken down.

They obviously think that it should have become the next AmigaOS.  It is very similar to AmigaOS4.x in many ways, but since it has been worked on for a longer time period, IMHO it has a more polished feel to it, but I am biased.

If Hyperion would release AmigaOS4.x on some hardware that is much faster than the 1.5GHz G4 MacMini (PowerBook & PowerMac G4???) then I would really consider switching to using AmigaOS4.x, but I won't switch unless there is a good reason, like better and more native software, plus better and faster hardware.

No idea who's ripping you off for a G4 MacMini, but you can buy a new Intel one for that money.

MacMini G4s are generally $200-$250 USD around here, and dropping due to lack of support in Snow Leopard.

Lets just say MOS is what AmigaOS would have been had C= not died and kept on with development. It looks, feels and acts like a modern day implementation of the Amiga, with loads of compatibility with modern REAL Amiga software, applications and games.

I have to agree, keep off Ebay if you have access to craigslist. I neve use ebay now and I see G4 mini's going for $200-$300 all the time here in San Diego. I would get one if I didnt have a 1.25Ghz version, and it works perfectly fine for MOS, even with half the video memory the 1.5's have.

MorphOS is an OS for PPC that is compatible to AmogaOS 68k, PowerUp and WarpUP applications. Several OS4 apps can be run by a wrapper (OS4Emu), which is kind of comparable to WINE.
Furthermore MorphOS can run MorphOS binaries of course.
The structure and layout of MorphOS is like you know it from Amiga OS 3.x. There is C: libs: s: devs: and so on. The foundation of the OS is exec and intuition and all the other libs and files known from Amiga OS 3.x.
MUI is prettywell integrated (and enhanced) into the system. Workbench has been replaced by a much more modern and MUI based successor that is open source: Ambient.
Many things have been modernized and optimizes, some things have changed. E.g. The prefs are now accessible by one app (still it is possible to access the seperately), or the system files are seperated in a better-don't-touch drawer called sys:morphos/ (inside that drawer there  is c/ s/ devs/ and the whole shebang that is also available outside the sys:morphos/ drawer. You may mess with everything outside morphos/, but dont't touch sys:morphos.
And the best news: It is unbelieveable fast and you can try it for free!

I've got this running on my Mini now... Its pretty awesome. I'm running it on the lowest spec mini you can get and it still fly's (1.25ghz/256mb ram)

The ibook/powerbook version of MorphOS will make a lot of people really happy!
I know my old ibook had the almost same specs as this mini.

Yeah, Mom might be getting a "New to Her" computer to replace her iBook soon, if MorphOS2.5 is released and it works on her 1.42GHz G4 iBook.  Dear old Dad, who lives with the "Aliens" in Roswell, NM has a 17" G4 iMac that might also get the MOS treatment if the hardware is close enough and the MOS Dev Team gets bored and has nothing better to do.  It would really be great if MOS could be optimized for the G5 Power Macs and also if it could be rewritten to use more than one CPU and multiple cores, but everyone says that those dreams are just never going to happen.

I have my registered version of MOS2.4 running smoothly on my 1.5GHz G4 MacMini w/512mb RAM and 64mb VRAM.  It fairly flies and has no problem displaying several 1920x1080 screens beautifully on my Acer 23" widescreen LCD monitor.  I have not been this excited about any Amiga (-Like) computer since I upgraded from my A1000 to my A2000 in 1990.

The eMac is running a development-version of MorphOS (aka 3.0), you won't have any luck with the public version on anthing but the mini.

Bout the logo, well I had to make sure I don't accidently carry the wrong Mini to an Amiga-event (that would be the CoreDuo one). That, and that I was extremly bored ;)
