Check the "Show All Files" option in the Workbench menus, even files with no .info will show up, and try installing DefIcons/NewIcons to make the defaults more meaningful (and colourful). Then RTFM and play about with things for a while. MrIcon might be handy too (check Aminet) for converting "fake" icons into real ones.
