Amiga Icon Files
« on: April 03, 2010, 02:40:10 PM »
Hi,

I'm just starting to learn how to program for the Amiga OS and was wondering if there existed any tools for the creation of icon files?

I've found the article http://teleinfo.pb.edu.pl/~krashan/articles/amigaicons/ which explains the file format but would rather not put together the .info files by hand if I can help it.

Cheers :),

Danny

Tools/IconEdit pretty much does the job here. :)

Woops, how did I miss that :).

Thank you very much :).

I've got another question if you don't mind.

I've been downloading various Amiga applications from the net (such as the Christmas competition games) and have added them to a folder which I have specified as a hard drive in WinUAE.

The issue I have is that the directories and files are not recognised by the Amiga OS (as a result of them lacking .info files). So far I've been creating these .info files manually for each file but would rather not if I can avoid it.

Do you know of any way that I can automatically generate .info files for each directory and file?

Thanks very much,

Danny

Check the "Show All Files" option in the Workbench menus, even files with no .info will show up, and try installing DefIcons/NewIcons to make the defaults more meaningful (and colourful). Then RTFM and play about with things for a while. MrIcon might be handy too (check Aminet) for converting "fake" icons into real ones.

Which OS/Kick versions are you using? If you want advice on emulated Amigas you need someone else to help you.

You don't say which version of the OS you're using, but if it is 2.0 or higher, selecting Window=>Show=>All Files is probably all you need (if you then Window=>Snapshot=>Window it will remember this state), unless you have a particular requirement for real icons.

I used to be a happy user of Iconian before the new icon formats came along.

As nice as the icon editors like Iconian and the OS3.9 icon editors are, I have found that the best way to make icons is to use Personal Paint, then pick up the icon as a brush and save it as an icon file. It supports normal and NewIcon icons (with the extra library). I find it's best to save the brush as a regular icon first, then save over it with the NewIcon option ticked, so the icon will work on all systems.

You can get this essential application and the extra library needed to save icons on Aminet:

Or if you're in the mood to edit the icons on your Workbench with a very handy tool, try Iconian:

I've pondering, in these days of png icons (well, not OS4), what prevents use of png icon also on "lowend" amiga? I mean, png can also be 1-4 bits or whatever.

And on a related issue - is there some tool that can scan disk for .info and convert them all to a given format, for example png, or whatever that format OS4 uses.

Thanks everybody. Very much appreciated :).

I've had a bit of a play with all those tools. They all look interesting. I really like how the Amiga OS allows different images for their selected and not selected states. Much more interesting.

Cheers again :),
