Title: Elbox
Post by: dangermouse on June 11, 2010, 01:37:22 AM
Anyone have any experiences buying direct from Elbox?

I sent an email asking about their Mediator deal and have not received a reply. A lot of money to send to a company that has not answered simple pre-sales questions.

Would like to hear from people with experience buying from them :)

Thanks

I ordered from them a few years back and got the items quickly with no problems.

People seem generally pleased with their products and I don't think they add hard drive trashing code any longer.

Avoid the Spider card, if still listed.

They have a very strict spam filter that seems to drop a lot of email.  Make sure the email address and server you send from passes all know blacklists, has proper SMTP names and IP address reverses.. etc etc..

You might want to use a different email address to see if they repsond to that.

For me, they've responded after an unreasonably lengthy period.

The first case is where they were offering an upgraded EPROM chip from version 4.x to version 5.01(b) for the FastATA 4000.  It took 4 or 5 months to get it, & only after prodding them with e-mails & posting here, asking if they're still in business.  I thought I never would get the EPROM chip, but I was glad that I was wrong.  That was about 2 1/2 years ago.

This last December, I sent back my FastATA1200 MK-III because it appeared to no longer function after about 3+ years of fantastic service.  I had debugged what the problem was, hoping that it came loose from the motherboard or that my A1200 went bad, but I reluctantly diagnosed that it was the FastATA1200 MK-III no longer working.  I was extremely reluctant to send it back to Elbox to repair because they seem to take too long to get any response from.  I contacted them & was told to ship it back to them.  This reply surprised me because it was fairly prompt of them.  This communication with them was last September.  I finally got around to shipping it last December.  I got an e-mail from them in January asking me what the package was because they were notified by Polish customs that they had a package from me.  I wrote an e-mail to them in either April or May stating that I am a patient guy, but would you please tell me the status of its debugging & repair.  I still have yet to hear back from them. :-(

I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt, that they're busy with other things that earn them real money & still support the Amiga out of the goodness of their heart, but I wish they would at least communicate in a normal & timely fashion.

Their FastATA products are great!  They reduce the time to burn CDs (& DVDs) by reducing the hard drive access times significantly.

It's truly a pity that they don't know that communications is the foundation of a good relationship - with their customers.

This famous SPAM filter of theirs seems to be an issue.

I've emailed them in the past and got no reply and then I emailed them 3 days ago to enquire about the correct shipping costs for a Radion card and replacement ROMs for my FastATA4000 and got 2 fast and helpful replies over 2 days.

Make sure you're using a good email account, don't swear in the text and make sure the subject line isn't blank.

If all else fails then send your email to me and I'll forward it to them as mine seems to go through.  :)

Yes, this is how I purchased my Mediator, AmigaKit. I never dealt with them directly. I can say that the Mediator bus was well designed, fit well, and had a decent cdrom and manual with it.

Oddly, I have never used the thing, no PCI cards whatsoever.

Umm... What the hell do you use it for then? A very expensive power adaptor??

I bought hundreds of pounds worth of kit from them a few years ago and it arrived without issue.  I am also impressed with the standard of aftermarket Amiga hardware that Elbox produce.  It is my opinion that Elbox have always made the best Amiga hardware in the market.

If you are concerned then I would recommend AmigaKit as a trustworthy reseller of Elbox hardware.

AH.

Pretty much, but my B-vision is dying so I'll probably use it soon, the real reason I got it, backup. And it was an older version that was reduced.

Ah, fair enough... It does make it pretty easy to add anything else that you need in an emergency :)
