You would have to emulate 68k AND PPC transparently in this creepy OS5 !

OSX do that, why not OS5?

Quote
OS5:  runs on any Amiga licensed Hardware, which is the same as nowhere.

I'm not sure if with OS5 they will make the same mistake of OS4 that runs only on licensed hardware. According to Bill McEwen's interview, OS5 will have broader hardware coverage.

AROS is cool, but with no future.

I would like to try AROS on a Virtual Machine at first. Has anyone tried this?

Just goes to show how crap google can be at times. I spent ages looking for a Virtual PC image of AROS.

OS5 LOL!!!

I have spent years waiting for OS4. The time the OS4 pre-release turned up I find that there is no hardware available! I for one is not waiting half a decade for vapourware that is not destined to be a desktop OS anyway, from a company with a less than convincing track record, putting it mildly.

I am actually interested in OS's running on virtual processors as I believe that is the long time future. Microsoft have their own research operating system running on the CLR. I just ain't going to wait for Amiga inc to do it, and I can't see them pulling it off anyway. More likely than some DE enhancement piggy backing off some other host operating system.

My patience has ran out. Should OS4 ever see the light of day, it will run on expensive, out of date hardware (probably b0rked as well). The Amy 05 seemed like the last best hope for running OS4. Today I read that they don't even have a license and that there still won't be a working demo at BB4. There is also something fishy about the Amy 05 as well. The two other license mystery devices are more than likely embedded devices. If by some miracle it is a desktop machine it is bound to be expensive and dated.

I'm fed up of the delays, the legal {bleep}, the secrets, the politics and the vague promises. The Bill McEwen Q & A's just remind me of all the fluff I have heard years ago.

The money I was going to spend on travelling and hotel for BB4 is now going to go on a nice LCD monitor for a new AROS machine. The money I was setting aside for a Amy 05, plus a years interest, is now going to go on a cheap, fast, small, x86 system and most of the money left over will go on AROS bounties.

if os4 is ever released and enough people can afford it and put up with the hardware, amiga inc. may have enough money to finish os5.
or... people, seeing the price of os4 hardware decide to wait for os5 and cheaper hardware so os5 doesnt receive enough funding and is delayed till 2010.
or... people realize that aros is really what we all wanted in the first place and we dont hear from amiga inc for another 5yrs, and then its only 20 questions.

any way it goes i already have my nexgen amiga os
Oh yeah?!?
Well your stupid bit is set,
and its read only!

Great article, i am about to DL light version to test it. If we are about to wait OS5.. then guys sorry but you are into S/M type of people. I mean, how many ppl will give 800++ euros on obsolete H/W and hope it will be replaced in warranty period? Not to speak about S/W side; we wait OS4 for a verryyyyy loooong period and still don't know when it will (if ever) come. Yet, Bill talks about OS5!? Yeah... right

But AROS? Finally the look and feel of amiga on cheap h/w. The only, ONLY thing it misses right now is a lack of 68k integrated emulation. When it is done (when it is done :) ) i believe MANY ppl now playing with uae and amithlon will install aros and win for a dual-boot system. I will for sure.

AROS deserves all of our support! But if OS5 really comes to life, AROS will be irrelevant.
that's rediculous. seriously, Emulation like WinUAE or a system like AROS are VERY useful and always will be because they allow developers to keep exercising their programming muscles.
plus, users like me get to keep being productive using an amiga OS.
And, as I have my WinUAE on my laptop, I can take my amiga files anywhere.

I just said in this thread that I put AROS on a flash drive. I'm taking that with me to an amiga meeting held tonight. don't underestimate the possiblities that AROS provides. Open your mind.

UAE runs on so many systems, that it's irrelevant that it's in AROS or not.

I have a open mind. You've mentioned AROS on flash, but BasiliskII/SheepShaver with MacOS7.6.1 running on a flash is much more useful and flexible than AROS with UAE.

AROS IS REALLY COOL, but not useful until it has some really good software.

Intel OS X does NOT emulate a 68K.  It's emulation of PPC is a bit dodgy at times, somethings just lock the system, others don't run.  On the other hand you don't need to emulate PPC on an Intel Amiga anyway.

As for waiting for OS5, well I'm waiting for monkeys to fly out of a certain orafice too, and I think there's probably a better chance of that.  How long have we been waiting for OS4?  And even when OS4 is available you can't run it on $100 surplus Mac equpment, you have to run it on $800 AmigaOne equipment that has the same specs as $100 surplus Mac equipment!
