Title: AROS: Onboard the Last Train to Amiga Neverland
Post by: Argo on September 14, 2006, 06:08:08 AM
It was 1997 and in these dark ages of the Amiga history, a few brave ones have embarked on a seemingly impossible journey. It is difficult to start from a clean slab, but complete rewrite of the AmigaOS Application Programming Interface (API), in open source domain, was the only option for Amiga community to gain control over destiny of the beloved platform. The Amiga Research Operating System (AROS) was born. Under, at times slow but steadfast progress, the vision is nearly complete. Not only is AROS almost feature-for-feature complete when compared to AmigaOS 3.x, but it has excelled many of the original design specifications.

A good article that could have been improved with more relevant (and up to date) screenshots.  However the use of British English is most welcome ;)

It is clear that the AROS community are desperately seeking developers to code/port software, and I'm confident that such articles will help to improve support for the project.

Take care,
James

ps. 'venerable but now outdated'...hmmm, really?  The screenshot on the AIAB website appears more advanced than those in the referencing article.

They all 3 are advanced enough :)

Very good article, I liked and I really also feel this is the future! ;)

The article claims that you can use Amiga Web Browsers inside E-UAE on AROS. That's true. There's a "small" problem with that: with E-UAE running on AROS you don't have bsdsocket.library emulation so you don't have network support.

since I Just installed AROS lite on my one GB mircoSD flash drive (with plenty of room to spare and even other files already there), I can now play around quite easily.
I'm going to install lunapaint and see what happens.

now THIS is the Amiga Fun we all love!    :pancake:

I'm going to carefully read that article to get any hints I need. As I have known for some time AROS is a good thing!
Title: AROS X OS5

Very nice article. But I think that AmigaOS5 for x86 will decrease the interest in Aros.
Title: Re: AROS X OS5
Post by: Argo on September 15, 2006, 06:27:13 AM
Dude, there isn't even a release date for that yet. Actually we haven't heard much about it, other than it has been in development for two years. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.
After all the crap that has gone on since the dimise of Commodore, I'd think people would be more in to the here and now than the promises of what could be, someday, maybe, kinda, if everything works out.

AROS itself is cool, but it has very few software avaiable. It's almost unuseful. I prefer to wait for OS5.

Yikes... is this OS5 speculation?

Yes that is true.
I am sure the mystical OS5 has a lot more native Software... :-D  :-D  :-D

You are free to wait as long as you like.

I have waited far too long, so I am supporting AROS as good as I can.

Hehehe. If OS5 is a multiplatform OS4, so any AmigaOS software will run on it, but AROS unfortunately can't do that.

AROS deserves all of our support! But if OS5 really comes to life, AROS will be irrelevant.

Maybe I misunderstood the Term Multiplatform OS but for me it means that the OS can run on multiple Platforms.
If that is true, then AROS is a Multiplatform OS because it runs on x86, PPC and even on 68k...

Multiplatform OS does not mean, that any 68k, or PPC Application, that was written for AmigaOS will run on this Thing !

Just think about that.
You would have to emulate 68k AND PPC transparently in this creepy OS5 !

But if OS5 really comes to life, AROS will be irrelevant.

I highly doubt that.

Just compare the both OS:

OS5:
runs on any Amiga licensed Hardware, which is the same as nowhere.

AROS:
runs on any standard PC.

OS5:
If there is a Amiga licensed Hardware that runs OS5, it will cost 800 - 1000 € / $

AROS:
You can buy used PC for less the 50 € / $ that perfectly runs Aros.

OS5:
If there is a Bug or missing feature, you can just hope and prey, that the OS owners fix it for you and sell you a "New Version"

AROS:
If you like, you can download the source and fix / modify it by yourself.

OS5:
If the OS owner loses Interest in its product, you cant do anything about it. The OS will be dead.

AROS:
It is open source, there will always be some developers to improve it.

You're right Heinz. And it's what I've said since 1999 when me and some other dudes wanted Amiga to open source the OS. AROS wasn't that advanced back then. Anyhow, Amiga has used our patience, and there's nothing left in my camp. AROS is the way forth, no more being cut down. If you think about it, the Amiga curse could strike any closed source, *owned* Amiga effort, but not AROS. It can't be shut down, it can't be stopped, it's Open Source. So it's safe to lay your eggs there ;-)

When reading the McEwen interview, he said something like: If you've violated our IP, talk to us, or wait till our lawyers get you!. You will never need to violate any IP with AROS, knowingly or not. And when you're 70, you don't have to worry about being sued if you're booting AROS up in your x86/ppc/whatever emulation software. AROS is about thinking ahead.

OSX do that, why not OS5?

I'm not sure if with OS5 they will make the same mistake of OS4 that runs only on licensed hardware. According to Bill McEwen's interview, OS5 will have broader hardware coverage.

AROS is cool, but with no future.

OS5 LOL!!!

I have spent years waiting for OS4. The time the OS4 pre-release turned up I find that there is no hardware available! I for one is not waiting half a decade for vapourware that is not destined to be a desktop OS anyway, from a company with a less than convincing track record, putting it mildly.

I am actually interested in OS's running on virtual processors as I believe that is the long time future. Microsoft have their own research operating system running on the CLR. I just ain't going to wait for Amiga inc to do it, and I can't see them pulling it off anyway. More likely than some DE enhancement piggy backing off some other host operating system.

My patience has ran out. Should OS4 ever see the light of day, it will run on expensive, out of date hardware (probably b0rked as well). The Amy 05 seemed like the last best hope for running OS4. Today I read that they don't even have a license and that there still won't be a working demo at BB4. There is also something fishy about the Amy 05 as well. The two other license mystery devices are more than likely embedded devices. If by some miracle it is a desktop machine it is bound to be expensive and dated.

I'm fed up of the delays, the legal {bleep}, the secrets, the politics and the vague promises. The Bill McEwen Q & A's just remind me of all the fluff I have heard years ago.

The money I was going to spend on travelling and hotel for BB4 is now going to go on a nice LCD monitor for a new AROS machine. The money I was setting aside for a Amy 05, plus a years interest, is now going to go on a cheap, fast, small, x86 system and most of the money left over will go on AROS bounties.

if os4 is ever released and enough people can afford it and put up with the hardware, amiga inc. may have enough money to finish os5.
or... people, seeing the price of os4 hardware decide to wait for os5 and cheaper hardware so os5 doesnt receive enough funding and is delayed till 2010.
or... people realize that aros is really what we all wanted in the first place and we dont hear from amiga inc for another 5yrs, and then its only 20 questions.

any way it goes i already have my nexgen amiga os

Great article, i am about to DL light version to test it. If we are about to wait OS5.. then guys sorry but you are into S/M type of people. I mean, how many ppl will give 800++ euros on obsolete H/W and hope it will be replaced in warranty period? Not to speak about S/W side; we wait OS4 for a verryyyyy loooong period and still don't know when it will (if ever) come. Yet, Bill talks about OS5!? Yeah... right

But AROS? Finally the look and feel of amiga on cheap h/w. The only, ONLY thing it misses right now is a lack of 68k integrated emulation. When it is done (when it is done :) ) i believe MANY ppl now playing with uae and amithlon will install aros and win for a dual-boot system. I will for sure.

that's rediculous. seriously, Emulation like WinUAE or a system like AROS are VERY useful and always will be because they allow developers to keep exercising their programming muscles.
plus, users like me get to keep being productive using an amiga OS.
And, as I have my WinUAE on my laptop, I can take my amiga files anywhere.

I just said in this thread that I put AROS on a flash drive. I'm taking that with me to an amiga meeting held tonight. don't underestimate the possiblities that AROS provides. Open your mind.

UAE runs on so many systems, that it's irrelevant that it's in AROS or not.

I have a open mind. You've mentioned AROS on flash, but BasiliskII/SheepShaver with MacOS7.6.1 running on a flash is much more useful and flexible than AROS with UAE.

AROS IS REALLY COOL, but not useful until it has some really good software.

Intel OS X does NOT emulate a 68K.  It's emulation of PPC is a bit dodgy at times, somethings just lock the system, others don't run.  On the other hand you don't need to emulate PPC on an Intel Amiga anyway.

As for waiting for OS5, well I'm waiting for monkeys to fly out of a certain orafice too, and I think there's probably a better chance of that.  How long have we been waiting for OS4?  And even when OS4 is available you can't run it on $100 surplus Mac equpment, you have to run it on $800 AmigaOne equipment that has the same specs as $100 surplus Mac equipment!
