Title: Excessive chipmem usage on os 3.1.4 ?
Post by: Mr_DBUG on March 12, 2021, 09:44:34 PM
Hello !
I am since recently running OS3.1.4 softkicked on CF card on one of my A1200s (with the brilliant Amigakit CF rear port adapter) -
but I am having problems that Chipmem is used up so fast ! Seems it happens on listing directories ?
Any solution / ideas for me ?

Greets Dag !

What do you mean by “listing directories”? Opening drawers on Workbench? Using “List” in the shell?

Do you use “C:Copy” a lot as well? :)

In general it is a good idea to use FBlit or P96+Native driver to save precious chipram, but you then need more fast ram instead.

If by listing directories you mean opening windows on Workbench - then yes. If you have hundreds of files and icons, like with a WHDLOAD installation, your CHIPRAM will vanish incredibly fast. What you want is a utility to move that data (and others) to FAST RAM. In the past, FBLIT did a good job. With Amiga OS 3.1.4 you will have better luck loading Picasso96 (Available to purchase for a few bucks from Individual Computers) and a driver you can find on Aminet called native.lha. This combinations adds a few RTG tricks to your OCS/ECS/AGA Amiga, including keeping icon and Workbench picture data in FAST RAM. It is incredibly useful, and afterwards Workbench gently sips CHIP RAM instead of guzzling it.

Easy thing to do, is show by name and then show all files.
Saves killing Chip RAM.

Is maybe best to install the rom chip, i have 2 megs chip free only have the normal 3.1.4 install and the 3.1.4 rom on the 500+.
