Thank you Psxphill,

Wawrzon, I don't believe Intel believes in the ARM architecture having invested money on there own design, although Microsoft has Windows 8.1 RT, which is not really useful except for Cerfing the web and light tasks.

There are Intel based tablet/laptops below $600 and plenty of laptops in that range, but you will be looking at non-familiar names on AliExpress or similar.  A good tablet paired with a typable keyboard in a fitting cover is the cheapest option, but finding a powerful enough CPU for quick response on a bloated OS is the true problem.  C'est la vie!

Ok, you can get an unbranded i3 or Celeron with 2gb of ram for less than $600. I'm not sure I'd want to run 64 bit windows 8.1 on that.

They are very popular at the moment. I doubt you will get a discount. If you don't run anything graphics intensive the atom was adequate. The lower price and 11 hour battery might make up for the lack of cpu power.

The cheap atom tablets seem to be 32 bit only and he wanted 64 bit (yes intel do seem to be making 32 bit only cpu's still).

There are 64 bit Atom CPU's now, but they are every bit as miserably slow as their 32 bit counterparts, imo.  I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole, anyways - Atom CPU's have always been woefully underpowered, even compared to the lowest of low end Celeron chips.

Intel are now boasting that the latest Atom chips run circles around the Apple A7 chips, which I always found was akin to comparing apples and oranges, pardon the pun.

It depends on the configuration, they go from 64GB+i3, 128GB+i5, 256GB+i5, 256GB+i7 to 512GB+i7. In the UK

MICROSOFT Surface Pro 3 12" Tablet - 64 GB Intel® Core™ i3 Processor £639.00

Microsoft Surface Pro 3, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, Windows 8.1 Pro, 12", 512GB, Wi-Fi, Silver for £1,649.00

If you're a student then Microsoft will sell you one cheaper (£575.10 for the smallest i3). But that is 895 dollars (although Microsoft pricing in dollars is likely to be completely different). It's hard to get Microsoft or google to give you a dollar price outside of the us (or I can't figure out how to....) but amazon have the cheap i3 on sale for $778.78. So it still is way over the budget that he set and it's nearly $200 to go for the i5 (which is the only way to get more than 64gb of storage).

How about the  ASUS Flip 15.6-Inch 2-in-1 Convertible Touchscreen Laptop (Core i3)?

It seems really slow and low quality. You should be able to find something better for the money.

Well, I'm not going to measure your "pole," but as I said earlier the Atom just runs Win 8 "OK."  It exist to run crappy OS's on weak hardware for a long time with poor graphics, but in my case I needed a cheap win tablet to get thru a poorly designed VPN using IE to access labs while I was making rounds.

High end Asus stuff is great, but I wouldn't touch the low end stuff.

Could be, buddy, could be.  It's a ten foot pole, after all, lots of wiggle room.

I haven't had any luck with low end Asus gear, it's always ill mannered, plasticky crap that's poorly designed.  And I use Asus stuff exclusively on the desktop (gfx cards, mobos).

The Asus C7 laptop on the other hand is damned near perfect.
