Dell UltraSharp 2007FPB 20" LCD Monitor
« on: December 20, 2017, 05:27:22 PM »
I apologize if this question has been answered before about this monitor.

I am looking at getting one of these monitors for my Amigas. Wanted to ask the forum if anyone has any experience using it with Amigas.

Will this monitor support 15KHZ? Will it work with Amiga's if one has the correct DB25 to HD15 converter?

Thanks for any information.

I have that exact monitor hooked up to my A2000.  You can still buy them used and refurbished on sites like amazon.com for between $40-$100.  It correctly displays nearly every screenmode I can throw at it from my Indivision ECS and GVP Spectrum (P96) graphics cards, but does not, to my recollection, display 15KHz modes (even when hooked up to the composite port).

That being said, it's probably the most capable, largest, 4:3 aspect ratio (non-widescreen) screen you're going to be able to find out there for any sort of reasonable price in 2017.

The 2001FP supports 15KHz although with some manual centering needed. I do not think the 2007 model works at all in 15KHz though.

Thanks for the info guys.

Does anyone know of a 20" monitor that works well with Amigas using just a  DB23 to HD15 converter? Any brand? Any model? I have looked over the 15KHz list but most have exceptions (example: like the manual centering on the 2001FPB).

Is there a recommended flat screen 20" monitor that just works with no exceptions?

Thanks

Well, the Gateway KX2153 21" LCD W/S Monitor works perfect for me with my A500's and the C< buffered adapter. Also, over at Epsilon's Amiga Blog - Epsilon discovered an Acer equivalent.

http://amigax1000.blogspot.com.au/2017/12/acer-lcd-screen-that-supports-amiga.html

Not so well with the A1200 yet but we're working on it as depicted here...

http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=72842

I'm going to get just a straight passthru 23pin to 15pin adapter here shortly and try that with the A1200 - and continue to pursue the buffered adapter's fix.

I was curious where the "buffered" description is coming from. I thought the Commodore adapter was NOT buffered. I do not even know what that means in this context to be honest, but I thought that is what separates this:

from the Commodore and similar adapters.

Well, I always thought it was buffered (390682-01 quick search) as described here...

It makes sense. The Commodore adapter does have a chip inside. But I have used other adapters such as the one here:

http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?78792-Amiga-VIDEO-VGA-Adapters-amp-Cables-DELUXE-(real-23pin-conns)

I got a non-buffered version from the seller and it too displays vertical bars on my monitor.

Maybe his "buffered" version does not have the Commodore clock line connected and could be free of bars? Not sure why I got the non-buffered one from him. Probably due to my confusion on buffered vs non-buffered.

So yours is simply a passthru (no IC inside)?

If that's the case then I wont bother buying a passthru.... good to know jdryyz. I keep meaning to google the chip inside (74HCT08 - quad 2-input AND gate) the C< version. Think I'll do that right now...

I'm going to pin this IC out to which ever (input and output) pins go to the monitor (MmmHmm - later).

Anyone else? :)

The one I got from the Amibay seller, yes. The Commodore is a buffered adapter, apparently. I learned that just today.  :D

Makes me curious now. I might crack open my non-Commodore adapter to see if it really is chip free.

And please check to see if pin15 has continuity to ANYTHING inside! :laugh1: *

I checked pin 15 -no connection, checked shield not connected to gnd in the adapter.
I looked at the info on the 23 pin video connector. Most of the pins show an impedance (47 ohms on the unconnected pins) 75 ohms on the connected video pins. Pin 15 when plugged into the computer connects to "C! Clock Out" which seems to need to be terminated. My guess would be that a resistor between 47 ohms and 150 ohms would help. Same as SCSI some times will work without termination but more reliable with term. If the resistor was placed in the computer devices that used pin 15 would be double terminated. It is best in the adapter.
