maffoo:

Before Ebay bought Paypal I had asked them (paypal via phone) about my $400 I "owe".  I asked if they could go into my account to get the money and they said no.  So then I called again but didnt let them know who I was and asked them about "a friends account that owed $400", and recieved the same answer.   Dont know how it is now and dont really care since I dont use Paypal.  Their rules may or may not have changed since then.

I would assume my experience is an indication that their rules have changed, wouldn't you?

Personally, I never liked paypal. My biggest gripe with the
sellers on ebay. Is when sellers have a paypal only auction
on ebay. When a seller has a paypal only auction. I have
notice sometimes that paypal only auctions don't do to well.

Thats why I always pay by postal money order or cashier check.
Sure it takes awhile longer. But for me its sometimes worth
the wait. Another gripe I have with sellers on ebay. Sellers
who charge way to much on shipping costs. ebay sellers please
use other methods payment! paypal is not the only method of
payment!

There is a scam some sellers do.. Charge a low price for the item and a lot for shipping so eBay doesn't take as much of a chunk out of the selling price.

Since eBay owns PayPal they jack the seller 3x.
1) Charge to place the ad
2) Charge a % of the sales price
3) Charge to accept money via PayPal

eBay is a scam.

Sssome seller claim the high shipping is to compensate them for standing inline at the post office.
Some sellers who charge a high shipping fee also toss your item loose in a USPS box! Some sellers don't get positive feedback because of this even when by some miracle the item isn't broken!
Yahoo auctions had way more scammers.

I wouldn't mind seeing an alternative but the eBay situation is similar to Microsoft and Windows. Both have a near-stranglehold on the market, and only niche markets use something different.

eBay is a scam.

Well, it did just let me sell an old copy of VB6 I've had lying around the house for $250, and get me paid the next day with a just a small chunk taken out of the amount.  Absolutely no hassle.

It's generally easy to avoid the jerks on eBay, it's just that people get greedy like they always do and forget that yes, some things are too good to be true, or take chances on obviously risky sellers (private feedback types, no paypal types, et. al.) or don't read the fine print about shipping (or any instructions at all...I mean, on one of my recent auctions I had a ton of people asking me to ship overseas when my shipping instructions clearly stated no oversea shipping, etc).

As a small-time seller myself, I accept ONLY PayPal.  Why?  Because it's extremely easy.  To me, it's worth the small percentage charged to know that I have money available to me immediately.

If you think about it, it's not really a jack or a scam.  I pay for the service which allowed me to sell the item, and I pay a percentage on the immediate transfer of funds (as any merchant would for the same.)  Since I have a PayPal debit card, I have access to my money as soon as the item is paid for.  I generally also only charge the real UPS or USPS shipping price, unless it's an item which is a real PITA to box and ship which has happened only once in my recollection.

But it is correct to say there are plenty of people who follow a not-so-fair set of rules, and I simply just don't buy from them, regardless of how bad I *want* what they are selling.  Because, no matter what, I don't *need* any item on eBay back enough to compromise my principles.

Again as a seller, I find no reason not to accept PayPal as a payment method.  But then, the only problem I have ever had with PayPal was $36 I lost to a jerk in NY over a cell phone.  In short, I bought a SonyEricsson T62u and received a T61z.  I filed a "did not receive item" complaint, but they dismissed my claim when he showed them a shipping ID -- I should have filed it as "not as advertised."

In this case it turned out to be great fun for two months as I managed to get his new personal information from another scorned seller and began calling (abusing) him and asking him about my $36 anytime I had a bad day.  :devildance:

I digress.  I prefer to pay with PayPal, and anyone who does not accept it does not get my money.  RetroGeek doesn't accept PayPal, and from what I have read I conclude that is a Good Thing(tm).

eBay should not charge the seller on 3 occasions. Period.

eBay's fee scales are clearly set out up front. If you don't like them, don't use eBay, simple.

I also prefer PayPal. I have always had good service and no issues. On one occasion, they refunded me most of the money I paid for software which turned out to be pirated.

Sellers charging excessive postage to circumvent the fees are breaking the rules - also stated up front. If you're affected by this, complain to eBay and they will pull the auction.

Some people say eBay don't give a damn as long as they get their cut. My experience suggests eBay are pretty strict and getting stricter all the time. Remember all that pirated software?...you don't see much these days. Spot an obviously dodgy car for sale and it will soon get pulled.

There are almost bound to be problems now and then. Name one business that doesn't have them. Considering the colossal scale of eBay, it never fails to amaze me how well it all works.
