Any interest in building an Amiga.org development team?
« on: December 24, 2002, 05:11:07 PM »
Hi guys,

As we continue to grow, we are slowly moving out of the range of services that Xoops, PHP (or Post) Nuke, or other out-of-the-box Content Management Systems (CMS) can handle.  Most were designed for small to low-medium size sites.  As it sits, Xoops is taking up an average of 20% of the 1.3 Ghz CPU for MySQL at any given time.

As such, if I can provide the working domain, and the hosting and everything else, are there any PHP Programmers out there willing to join the cause of writing a new engine for Amiga.org?

I am a programmer by trade, but I'm not able to do everything.  As such, I thought to initially develop a basic engine using another host and domain, then when ready, move it over here and replace Xoops on Amiga.org.

Steps

1) I have the domain(s) necessary
2) secure hosting?
3) get sourceforge project page going (I know nothing about this) including CVS
4) establish coding, filename, and directory standards (very little if any JS)
5) establish user authentication framework
6) start writing modules beginning with news and forums.
7) move data from Xoops to new engine.
xx) (when moderately ready and bug tested) go live.

Is there anyone out there in Amigaland who is up to the challenge?

Great idea, and I'd be happy to help with that.

Normally I code C and Java, but I have a decent amount of experience building asp, php sites with SQL backends.

Hey Wayne,

Well, I too am a programmer by trade but have no real experience with a real web site.  I do have experience programming databases though.  However, since I'm currently laid off and have not much to do except start pointless threads on Amiga.org I figured I could perhaps help you out.  I would actually like to get some real experience with designing and developing a web site as it could look great on my resume!  :-)  Let me know if you're interested.

Ok,

An initial forum is now built for us to discuss the beginnings.  volmer and Glaucus, see if you can access it.  Other people who want to help, just chime in and we'll go from there.  We really need a CVS and SourceForge expert.  I've asked Kent, but we'll see what he says.  He might be too busy.

Hi Wayne,

I'm as you probably already know working on my own PHP website project MINDRELEASE.net and just completed my first login system. I know, it hasn't been implemented properly on my site yet as I'm still working on the content to be viewed once the user has logged in. However, the actual login module is pretty much finished and works like a charm. It's based on PHP sessions rather than cookies (much more secure, the authentication is on the server side) and will keep the user logged in until the user closes his/her browser or if the user's connection is inactive for more than 30 minutes. Once logged in, the scripts checks for the users authentication level which gives us the possibility to adopt the page content depending on wether the user has administrative rights or not and can even be given different kind of administrative rights (such as news editor, forum administrator, webmaster, etc.). I'm willing to share my code for this if you like, just send a mail to samface@mindrelease.net.

I'm willing to help. Oracle PL/SQL + Magic Enterprise programmer by trade myself.  Had an "accident" 18 months ago, and had to "retire" from the business.  Something like this would be good to get myself back into the swing of things. Let me know what you need and I'll gladly do my best for you.

I'm more of a CSS/XHTML guru, but I would love to help where I can. I've done a bit of ASP/SQL and would love to start learning PHP.

I also have a thing about web standards and accessibility so I might be good for helping out making the site valid xHTML1.0.

Ideally I'd like to make a new site a complete CSS layout, but seeing as none of the Amiga browsers support this yet, perhaps a basic table layout for older/amiga browsers, all styled up with CSS to make it look nice in a modern browser :-)
Cheers,

Olly

I'm a Cold Fusion programmer by trade, and admittedly know very little about PHP.

What I can offer help in is site layout, planning and compatability testing.  As a rule, all the work my company does is 100% W3C compliant.

I like the Fusebox methodology [fusebox.org], but however, we don't use the entire system - we have a more simple system.  Standards for variable names, page names, directory structures etc can be set before anything gets started (nothing worse than changing stuff half way through).

I am fairly busy, but I *am* willing to help out as much as possible.

Perhaps we should start a private forum or mailing list for those interested.
