Workbench "About..." on 4000T
« on: February 23, 2011, 03:26:41 PM »
Hi,

I pulled up the 'About' box on my A4000T last night, and was surprised to see Workbench reported as V39.xxx.  I am running OS 3.5bb2.  Kickstart was correctly listed as V40.xxx.

I know the A4000T is a little weird in that workbench.library resides on disk instead of ROM, and wonder if this has anything to do with it.  My libs:workbench.library is V44.xxx though.

Any clues?

- Does the file "AmigaOS ROM Update" exist in your Devs: folder?

Yes it does.

- Is it possible that your Startup-Sequence has the SetPatch declaration with the option NOROMUPDATE instead of SKIPROMMODULES?

It is SetPatch v44.16 and the line at the top of my Startup-Sequence is :
C:SetPatch QUIET SKIPROMUPDATES scsi.device

I tried it without the SKIPROMUPDATES and it did not change the About box.

When I run SetPatch on the booted system, it says that Amiga OS ROM Update has been applied -- ROMUpdate 44.26 17.9.2000

Also the copyright on the screen titlebar is 2000.

I'm puzzled.  I do remember OS 3.5's installer CD not being 4000T-aware, dropping me to a CLI after rebooting from the pre- or main- or post-install, due to a missing workbench.library.  But it's been a while.

With BB2 fully installed you should see "ROM 3.9" in the title bar and Kickstart reported as V45.57. (Fully means with ROM update).

What's your version of version.library?

Will I see "ROM 3.9" on 3.5?  I do not have 3.9.  The About box currently says "3.1 ROM".

version.library is 44.4, 9/30/99.

thanks!

gar.  This is one of my older system partitions;  I think it traces all the way back to my first Amiga.  It's time to just do a fresh install.

You know, it might your Kickstart or Workbench ENV variables. Check ENVARC: and your startup sequence to see if they're set to something wrong.

Good thought.  Unfortunately ENV:Kickstart and ENV:Workbench only existed in ENV: and not ENVARC:, and even when I deleted them from ENV: the About... box still showed the antiquated version numbers.

So weird.  I'm liking the fresh start though, even if it means random hangs and a world of mystery...
