Post by: on December 19, 2002, 11:54:28 AM
OK, another daft question, but I have asked others without any luck.

What is the dIffernce in these drives.

DVD/CD- RW  and  DVD-R/CD-RW

Thanks for your time.

DVD/CD-RW:
A so-called combo drive
It is a DVD-ROM drive with a CD-RW writer in it.
-> only reads DVD -> read/write/rewrite CD-RW

**

DVD-R-CD-RW:
Writes/reads both DVD and CD- with rewrite only for CD's.
-> Write/read DVD-R  -> Read/write/rewrite

There's also DVD-RAM?? I guess both don't write them but may read them.

Sounds quite simple:
The first can only  read DVDs and burn writables & re-writables CD.
The second can also burn DVD.
Be carreful, as writable DVD goes in different forms.

There's DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+R & DVD+RW.

The tendance seems to go to the +R formats...

currently there seem's to be a great movement toward the
combo DVD+R/+RW drives which also can burn CD-R/-RW
nec and memotex has some with a very good prices.

(actually I would hesitate to suggest anyone to buy CD-R/-RW drives now)
