Title: Noob question: Can a Kickstart from an A2000 be used in an A500?

Yes, A500 and A2000 use the same Kickstart.

 The only difference is a variety of slots added with some logic glue. That's it, same.

I bought what I believe was a Village Tronic OS3.1 upgrade.
It had a wire soldered over the kick start chip.

Depending on the whether you had an A2000 or  A500, you would cut the wire.

No, depending on the motherboard revision, both A500 and A2000.
