GVP HD+ Fan
« on: January 23, 2016, 09:28:57 PM »
I am running a GVP HD+ sidecar off a 500 for hard drive and memory. Works great, 49mb drive. Thing is some time back I disconnected the fan cus it really did make a lot of noise. Got to thinking if that is a problem. The unit has worked without fault for a very long time. Wonder if anyone experienced the same thing and what are the risks. I guess I could replace the fan. Dunno.

I removed the fan on mine when I switched to a card reader instead of a hard drive.  Zero problems, obviously a card reader generates a lot less heat than a hard drive however.  Guess it pretty much depends on the heat from your particular model...

Thing about the Amiga as you know is that generally the computers are pretty quiet. This thing is so noisy you just can’t have it on. I have various bits of kit with noisy fans but amazingly after a while of running they kick out. I even know just where to tap a computer to stop them making a noise . One computer even goes through one full cycle on boot and after the last image has loaded on the screen the noisy fan kicks out. This thing sounds like a lawnmower. Also the gvp case is a pig cus to remove the top you have to disconnect both the fan and the connectors for the lights for the hd and power and they are a pain to reconnect. I took the screws out of the top to  let more air through. The fan is very small and looks purpose created by GVP. Just that I do use this hard drive unit a lot and keep my fingers crossed it just keeps going.

I have two of these units and the boxed one doesn’t have the fan.

My A4000 was like a siren as the sleeve bearing in the fan developed a large play in it. Finally I got tired of constant lubricating of it and changed a less noisy into the power.
