OS4.0 Classic with A1200 + IDEFix...
« on: February 23, 2011, 08:35:09 PM »
Ok, I tried them all!!!
RDB from OS3.1 (max 8 Gb) to OS4.0...
I tried all filesystems, even the last SFS version not inclueded in OS4 CD...
I always installed OS4 within the first 4 Gb...
I tried to install it in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd partition, trying different FS in all the partitions...
I tried with and without the upgrade (important for A1200)...
I tried to remove/add "services" (I do not know the exact name) from the kick file...

NOTHING!!!
OS3.9... ALWAYS!!! :-)

The only way to make it start is to use the RDB from OS3.1 and DOS/03 (loosing long names)...
mmm... also to boot from the floppy+CD and then make a soft reset but this is a bit too tricky! And loooooong...
I am sure it's possible to make fake partitions or something similar with "easier" DOS than DOS/07 but at the moment this is too complicated for me...
And anyway my HW is compliant and fully working with OS3.9!!!

I have read that "perhaps" it's IDEFIx fault but I need it and I leave it where it is now... CONNECTED AND HAPPILY WORKING!!!

They are not going to cheat me anymore! Before buying OS4.1 I will look for a "test version"!!!
It's written that OS4 does support IDEFix but I do not think so (or at least with my config and... many others if it's true what I have read!).
I have also some doubts about beta testing on A1200... why I always read that all tests are done on Cyberstormssssssssssss?!?!? Uff...
I would not be surprised if there were more BPPC than CPPC!!!

Sorry for this flame but I have lost many time in this days and... nothing!!!
And OS4 is very long to install and also to boot from CD+floppy!!!

Anyway all suggestions are welcome! I really hope I forgot something!!!

What size of HD are you trying to install it on, I could make an RDB for you and email it to you to write to your HDs RDB that works fine with OS4.0... :)

mmm... really?!?!? Could it be possible to solve the problem in this way?
Right now I am using an IBM DJNA-371350 => 13.5 Gb.
But I would like to use a Maxtor 6Y080L0-YAR => 80 Hb...
I have the IBM + PlexWriter PX-716A (DVD burner) on the first cable and the Maxtor + LS-120 on the second cable (if this helps).
If you can help... but you should have also to explain how to deploy the RDB on the HD...

I don't have a 13.5GB or 80GB HD (smallest is 200GB I think) but I'll see if I can set one up to the sizes required for an 80GB HD... :)

Reading & writing the RDB blocks on an HD is simple you just use one on the many PD tools like RDBTool from Aminet to read and write the HDs RDB blocks as a file, always handy in case your RDB gets corrupt for some reason and you need to rescue your HD... :)

EG:...

To save your HDs RDB to file for restoring a corrupted RDB (or even setting up a new HD of the same size)...
RDBTool DEVICE=scsi.device UNIT=0 File=RAM:200GB.rdb

To Write the file back to an HDs RDB blocks...
RDBTool DEVICE=scsi.device UNIT=0 WRITE File=RAM:200GB.rdb

Very easy and simple to do and save a lot of messing around partitioning and formatting HDs... :)

Leave it with me and I'll see what I can do... :)

One quick question/thought...

I notice your using the same BPPC as me. When you try to boot into OS4.0 how far do you get ie: it should be red screen, blue screen & purple screen = successful boot into OS4.0

If your only getting as far as the blue screen then your forgetting to (if you have it enabled on your BPPC) disable the ReMap ROM feature as OS4.0 wont work with this enabled... :)

Either hold down the two mouse buttons from power up to enter the early startup screen and boot OS4.0 from the partition it's on, or if like me you have a reset button on your Amiga hold it in for ten seconds and this will switch off the BPPCs MapROM feature... :)

As I say OS4.0 will not work (you wont get past the blue screen) when the MapROM feature is active and the kickstart has been re-mapped (same applies if your using BlizzKick to ReMap the ROM)... ;)

I reach the purple screen that goes on repeating... :(
Anyway I checked in the BPPC BIOS and the MapROM is disabled.
Another user told me that he had the same problem as mine and he had to remove the IDEFIx... but I do not want to! :( since other users do use it and if Hyperion writes that it works, it SHOULD!!! But I have not been able to...

After reaching the purple screen I also tried to reset with C+A+A, with the button on the case (yes, I made the mod)... nothing.

Do you have a 603 or a 603+?

Never been sure Scout says it's a 603+ but all other utils say 603.. !!!

Can't find an 80GB HD here so I'm trying just now to modify a 200GB RDB to 80GB parameters... :)

Never heard of the purple screen repeating before, sounds like you Amiga is constantly trying to reboot into OS4, so it sounds like the problem may be elsewhere, most likely where in your startup-sequence the 4xEIDE.driver is placed.

Took me a few goes using the FastATA.driver to find just the right spot in the startup-sequence for it to sit and for it to work properly... :)

It's a 603+ if it have the SCSI connector onboard! :)

Infact I think the problem is not on the HD chain but in the OS itself!
I know that IDEFix practically passthrough the first channel so I also tried to disable the Atapiismajik... I think the problem could be on the kickstart file but, again, I tried to disable what not used.
If you know, in which order the boot files are launched by Amiga? :-o
I only know the last one is startup-sequence!
