Kickstart 3.5
« on: June 20, 2003, 03:11:02 PM »
Has anyone heard of Kickstart 3.5? I swore I heard of such a thing a short while ago, if it exsists, then what is it exactly?
Earth has a lot of things other folks might want... like the whole planet. And maybe these folks would like a few changes made, like more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and room for their way of life. - William S. Burroughs

A fake.

Usually these lamers just edit the "3.1" to "3.5" with a hex editor, not even bothering to fix the actual version number in ROM header (40->44 or so).

There is no Kickstart 3.5 ROM. The last one was 3.1 (40.70, which had some problems, so 40.68 was used instead).

AmigaOS 3.5/3.9 "upgrade" the ROM by loading software patches from disk and rebooting the system.

Slightly incorrect, there was a beta of a 3.2 ROM inside of the Walker prototypes.  I don't think anyone has ever made a ROM dump of them tho.

Don't let him do that!!! it would make him "unclean"... then if he wanted to do some work on an Open Source AmigaOS clone (the name escapes me) then he couldn't :'(

True. That Kickstart 3.2 was V42 IIRC (or was it V43?). We saw the Walker running at Amiga & Retro Computing 2002 ;)

However, according to some comments I read somewhere (can't remember where from, sorry), there was absolutely no improvements on it, except the Walker specific parts added to the 2nd 512K rom ($f00000 area, like cd32 and cdtv).

I wouldn't find it surprising if the normal Kickstart ROM was actually 40.68, and only the 2nd chip was Walker specific + custom setpatch to modify the copyright message.

Anyway, I guess we can agree that 3.1 was the final official Kickstart ROM.

Greg Donner's excellent Workbench Nostalgia has some mentions of the Workbench 3.2, although mixed with some 4.0 stuff there.

I would still not have access to the source code, only a ROM dump I could use in UAE.

You thought wrong.

The patch is software. The ROM image itself is not modified. So if you save the ROM image after OS 3.5 has load rom update, you get exactly the same 3.1 ROM image as before.

@hnl_dk

They own the machine, what is illegal for them to allow access to it for the purposes of creating a backup "dump" of it's ROM?  They are not running the machine, so it's ROM can be used for a copy of UAE if given permission by the machines owner, aka Bill Buck.

@bloodline

Nope, it was George Washington.

I'd note, George Washington was excommunicated from the church several times, accused of being a heretic.

On the Amiga History Guide they claim at the bottom of this page http://amiga.emugaming.com/kickstart35.html that the walker rom wont work in uae.
