Commodore's new MP3/MPEG portable has been released,
Quote from the Stuff Magazine article:
"A capacious, nay, rapacious 30GB hard drive gobbles down MPEG 4, DiVx 5.0 and WMV9 files, while also despatching MP3, AAC, WMA and little known G726 audio files with aplomb, whatever a plomb is."
THIS is what Amiga should have been doing for the last five years, as it would have even fit with their AmigaAnywhere philosophy.

Excellent!
Looks like a pretty neeto piece of kit!
Any idea on the price?
Would look nice moulded into the dash of my car!
-
well i've seen quite a lot of those portable dinky things, and this one has got to be the best looking...isn't this the same company that made that commodore usb key that was on here a while ago?
price...well seeing it's a random company i'd guess at around £200 but that's my uninformed guess, w00pee!

Commodore (http://www.commodore.net) is the website..
This isnt there yet, im sure it will be tho.
-
doesnt look that great to me.
-
Oooo nice kit.
Totally agree with the "what Amiga should be doing" comment.

clearly!

Its gotta be the best thing since "newcommodore" took over..
... imho ;)
-
Go Commmodore! I will buy one of these!!
-
Oh My God... I just realized why I need one of these. Imagine being able to take it on a long flight and put two or three movies on it rather than having to lug around the comparatively large portable DVD player!
-
Exactly!
I wonder if it plays OGG vorbis files... ?

For sure.... But judging by their prices on the other stuff (20GB MP3 player @ 249 pound), I can't see how you could justify it at the price. Especially with the PSP on the market. You could get one of those, plus a couple extra memory modules for what I'd expect that little media-only player to go for.
It's cool, but what I think they should do is take the guts out, and make a C64DTV in a Gameboy form-factor with that nice looking display. ;-)
-
Well, unfortunately Amiga doesn't make a PMP that I can take on an airplane, and considering the size/portability issue, it looks to be perfect for that use. Dunno about the price (isn't posted yet I think) but it'd still be more useful to me and cost less than an ODW or AmigaOne.
PSP isn't intended for Video, and there aren't any 30GB memory cards that I'm aware of.. :)

Absolutely agreed.

>"Stay tuned for more details as and when we receive them… "
They've got the darned thing... what more details do they need? Open the manual and look at the specifications.
I have an issue with this device aside from it's inability to handle .OGG Vorbis audio.
It makes $ for Microsoft.
Yes, in order for them to play .WMA and WMV9 files, they have to play a licensing fee to MS. It's just part of that creeping fascism/corporatism.
Now if it included a C64/C128 emulator, it might be fun. If it had an Amiga emulator, it would be a must-buy.
Seriously people, since the CBM engineers are gone and "corporate culture" isn't even applicable, let's just consider that this might be a heathen gadget trying to get by on a familiar name and a logo.
For $299 US after rebates, (HSN.com allows an additional 15% discount if you get their credit card) you can get this iPod Killer that also plays and RECORDS video and lets you play it back on other devices. It plays music, lets you view photos, and has a 33% larger hard drive than the gadget from the company called Commodore. You might think of it as the TiVO you can put in your poocket. It's the

But it aint got the chicken-head on it!
:)
Overpriced or not, i like it.
It looks neet, simple, and impressive.
The MusTek PVR-H140 looks more like a digi cam with a large screen if you ask me ..

There's nothing abnormal here. WMA and WMV9 are Microsoft plugins and specs. It's no different than having to license Jpg to show them on a device nowaday.

Why would I buy this instead of a PSP? PSP can decode H.264
Oh nevermind...I have a laptop...
-
They REALLY should have added Dual Analog along with a directional pad, and a few buttons. My Gameboy SP can play movies and MP3's...
-
I thought it curious that if is either touted as a video device or an MPEG3 device, apparently depending on if the review liked it or not. As to why you'd buy it and not another, well, why buy a 50 year old car when you can have a new one? Why buy the old VW bug when they have the New Beetle? Why does my computer room devote so much space to my Amiga collection when I could buy a new laptop with state-of-the-art OS? or why do I fire my ceramic sculpture using wood for fuel instead of an automatic electric kiln? Because I prefer the differences.
-
I think we could port OS4 to this. :roflmao:
