Title: Voodoo3 card install problem help needed!
Post by: Daniele on February 28, 2008, 07:25:48 PM
I am trying to install t5he Vodoo3 card and the software and I am following the instrctions of the Mediator CD.

I downloaded Picasso96.lha from Aminet and installed it.
I have choosed Cybervision 64 3d like the instructions says.

Started again the installation of Picasso96 choosing "Update an installed Version" and selected "Monitorsetting" only but the program don't let me choose the frequency supported by my monitor like the instructions say.

then I have renamed CVision3d and CVision3d.info into Voodoo and Voodoo.info in DEVS:Monitors.

Then changend in the tool type window of Voodoo.icon BOARDTYPE = from CVision3d to Voodoo.

Then copied Voodoo.card driver to the Libs:Picasso96 drawer

Clicked the Voodoo icon (in Devs/Monitor drawer).

And now the point: I have to start Picasso96mode program  (in SYS:Prefs drawer) and select attach setting to board0: Voodoo and exit the program and save.

But on the menu of Picasso96mode I see attach setting to and above NO Board and if I try open and load voodoo nothing happens I cannot edit anything.

I have I always get the no modes message !!!!!!!

1) what can I do?

2) the instructions do not talk about the moment I have insert the cad and connect the VGA cable to the Voodoo board ( I tried to load the amiga with the cable connected to the voodoo but I only see black screen)

3) do you know where I can find a better explanation to install the Voodoo card?

Please help me

Many Thanks

Hi Daniele,

 I have had the same problems as you, take a look at this site, I found it very helpful.

When you installed P96 did you start the installation again and just used the UPDATE installation?
If you don't do these steps you won't have any P96 screenmodes for the Voodoo card

I think there's a guide on the Mediator MM cd

@dbrads

the fact is that I am following the site you gave me
http://www.stom.co.uk/amiga-mediator/content/tutorials/p96mode/index.shtml

and I am at Starting out point where I need to find the voodoo card.So click and drag the 'create new' icon to the lister within the 'Settings' box. This will create a new entry called 'not attached : New Setting'.
Now  I need to 'attach' the graphics card to this setting. Click on the 'not attached : New Setting' entry to select it. Next I have use the Menus and go to the 'Attach Setting To' menu, and I should now see the voodoo card but when I go on the menu attach setting to I have:

                  NO BOARD

and I cannot go on.

What can I do to let show the Voodoo card?

There is no need to create any screenmodes, please read my post

also check that your mediator is seated well and the cards are all firmly in, then run pciinfo to make sure it recognizes everything correctly. It should recognize every card's manufacturer and chipset, if you get "unknown" to any of the cards you have the well known "seating" problems of Mediator and its cards.

@Amigaz

how can I go on the installation of the card If I don't have to select any screen mode?
My amiga would not see the voodoo card and I would have balck screen after booting!

@Daniele

Copy the file Picasso96Settings### from the Picasso96 archive, found in the devs drawer, to the devs drawer on your SYS drive. Reboot, and try again. Copy the file with the refresh rates prefered, and rename it to Picasso96Settings (ie, remove the digits). I'd start with 31 or 38 if I were you.

The specific tooltype in the monitor driver should point to devs:Picasso96Settings.

-EDIT-

As mentioned in other posts; if the Voodoo card isn't recognised by PCIInfo, then you will never be able to get it up and running.

I'm talking about the Picasso96 install

When you use Picasso96 with the mediator and a voodoo card you must first install the Mediator files, then Picasso96 but after the picasso96 install is finished you start the Picasso96 install again but only choose UPDATE from the Picasso96 install
Then reboot or double click on the voodoo monitor files in devs/monitors to activate the voodoo driver
Then go into p96prefs and you'll see all the Voodoo screenmodes..choose one and "attach to board" voodoo, then test the modes and save + reboot

Everything must be done correctly, if you don't read the documents you'll get problems like you might have now

Like DoctorQ says...first see if your voodoo is recognized

@Amigaz

I have installed Picasso96 like you say and like it is stated on the doc file in the mediotor cd.So I installed the mediator files, installed Picasso96,reinstalled Picasso96 in update mode,rebooted and double clicked on voodoo found in devs/monitors but when I go in Picasso96Pref I can see only NO MODE and the voodoo card it's not recognized.

Please help me!!!!

@Daniele

We are trying to help you, but if the Voodoo isn't recognised by PCIInfo, your only option is to get the card to be recognised first.

Without it being recognised, you can do the installation of Picasso96 correct 100 times, and it still won't work.
Title: Re: Voodoo3 card install problem help needed!
Post by: Daniele on February 28, 2008, 09:29:18 PM
@doctorq

the voodoo card is recognized by the PCIinfo in the CLI

the problem is now that is I click Voodoo in the Devs/Monitors it comes up unoble to open and before when this worked as I said before from de Picasso96Prefs I had NO MODE in the menu and could not let recognize the Voodoo card.

After several attempts my configuration finally could see in Picasso96Mode on the Menu' attach setting to Board0 and I tried several configuration of resolution and tested it switching to the Voodoo VGA connection but when I saved the configuration and rebooted the Amiga I could only dispay the screen by RGB mode not the VGA. Why????

Now it happens that I could not see my Voodoo anymore by the Picasso96Mode and at the attach setting I have no board!!!  :-?

it's a real mess!

what can I do?

now I see in the Picasso96Mode in the settings Not attached - Village 31 and above some resolution but the Voodoo board is not seen and I cannot test beacuse the selection is not active.  :madashell:

Only one time I saw my card recognized and now I have NO BOARD. I am installing Picasso96 over and over again with no luck and now I am disappointed and wanna format everything or is there any workout for this?

Sounds like your Voodoo Monitor driver in devs:Monitor is not
getting loaded for some reason or you have a typo in the BOARDTYPE = line in the "Voodoo" Monitor driver tool types.

If you boardtype= tool type is not the same as the file it is attached to it will not work.  As lest that was the reason I was haveing what sounds like the same problem as you have the first time I tried to setup my Voodoo3 card with my MediatorSX  PCI busboard.

I don't know if it makes any difference but I have my network card in the top slot my sound card in the one bellow and my Voodoo card down the bottom of the case in the second last slot.  I would have put it in the bottom slot as I am told that is what amiga kit recommends but as I have my A1200 in a mk4 eyetech tower I cant use the very bottom slot.

It must make a difference because when I first installed
my mediator in my power tower I had problems until I installed
the network card in the bottom slot, usb card 2nd from the
bottom, voodoo 3rd from the bottom. It's weird but pci info
see's them all with this arrangement but had problems with any
other arrangement. Also, are there any environment variable's,
or lack of, that could be causing the problems he's having?

@Dwyloc

of course I have changed in the tool type of the voodoo.ico BROARDTYPE=Voodoo but When I open Picasso96Mode I have NO BOARD to attach.

it happened only one time that appeared BOARD0: Voodoo but then I have lost this configuration and when I tried to save the configuration and booting up my Miggy I could only see the screen under RGB not Voodoo VGA (Only Black screen).Then I lost this configuration and every time that I install again the whole stuff I am still having NO Board!!

Question: do you only edit the Voodoo icon information or you edit the Voodoo file itself?
Title: Re: Voodoo3 card install problem help needed!
Post by: Daniele on February 29, 2008, 07:37:15 PM
@rkauer

only the icon,

why?
Title: Re: Voodoo3 card install problem help needed!
Post by: rkauer on February 29, 2008, 07:49:46 PM
 Look inside the file for bad information (pointing to another card).

 Or:

 1- simply remove the whole package, then install it again;

 2- edit the file and .info with the exact same name, moving both to DEVS:Monitors/;

 3- update the installation.

I have my Voodoo3 card in the top slot and it works fine? I have a SB128 in the 3rd slot and a 10/100 card in the forth.

The SB128 works but I'm still trying to get my 10/100 card to work. Its on the "not tested" list on the Mediator guide so I'm not sure if it will.

Someone here told me that the top slot was the best one for the Voodoo card? I'm seeing conflicting reports all over the place?
Title: Re: Voodoo3 card install problem help needed!

@rkauer

can you explain me better 2) and 3) voices of your post please?

Thanks
Title: Re: Voodoo3 card install problem help needed!
Post by: Vulture on February 29, 2008, 08:44:16 PM
@spihunter

the conflicting reports come from the fact that many mediators are prone to errors when they're not positioned exactly as intended. Now when a user rearranges the cards and that accidentally results to Mediator getting into the correct position he goes: "so, it needs X card in X slot to function well.....!"
Title: Re: Voodoo3 card install problem help needed!
Post by: rkauer on February 29, 2008, 10:38:33 PM
 Explaining better:
Quote

 2- edit the file and .info with the exact same name, moving both to DEVS:Monitors/;

 When you create the Voodoo "driver" from CVision3d, rename both .info and file with the exact same name (even a space before or after the name make a lot of confusion).

Quote

3- update the installation.

 Only after creating the Voodoo file and icon you need to upgrade the P96 program.

and finally the Amiga can see the Voodoo card,

the I tested the resolution witching from RGB to the Voodoo VGA but when I saved the configuration and rebooted the Amiga I can only see the screen under RGB and NOT the VGA Voodoo card I have black screen!!!!  :-?

What I need to do to see finally the screen under the VGA Voodoo socket?

It's all working! For the Workbench screen, go into SYS:Prefs and run the screenmode pref. Select a Voodoo screen mode and save. Every application that you want to use a Voodoo screen you have to select the Voodoo screen mode you want from a screenmode requester in the settings or similar.

I had a guru after booting so I had to format my Amiga but the problem is that I formatting over and over again ,installing OS 3.9,installing Picasso96,update Picasso96 (Screenmodes)  but I always have Attach NO BOARD in the Picasso96Mode.

I am doing everything correctly but it won't work.

I have formatted 3 times utill now!

I install Picasso96 and choose CyberVision64/3d then in DEVS:Monitor I rename CVision3d and CVision3d.info into Voodoo and Voodoo.info.

Then I change the tool tipe window of Voodoo icon BOARDTYPE=Voodoo

Then Click to the Voodoo icon in Devs/Monitots (and sometimes the Amiga FREEZE ) then I reboot

Go to Picasso96mode in Prefs and see ATTACH TO NO BOARD.

In the mediator installation doc of the Voodoo at point 3) is written "Copy the enclosed Voodoo.card driver to the Libs:picasso96 drawer"

What do they mean wuth the term "ENCLOSED"???

Do I need to get it from the Mediator CD?

But after installing the Picasso96 I already have a Voodoo.card driver in Libs:Picasso96 and the file located on the Mediator cd has the size smaller than the one I have in DH0:

Anyway I tried getting the Voodoo.card file from CD and not but I always have Attach TO NO BOARD in Picasso96Mode

and I am formatting a lot of times!!!!

Please help me!!!

Of course you need to install the driver for the Voodoo, otherwise it won't work.

I guess you didn't do as AMIGAZ advised you to do earlier in this thread.

you must first install the Mediator files, then Picasso96

Ok, calm down  :-D

No board means exactly that - the system cannot see the board. This is 99% of the time a loose fitting voodoo card in the Mediator. Make sure the card fits snugly in the Mediator. if not, raise the Mediator by using washers. 1mm should do the trick.

Once you checked it physicaly, just do what you did before and the board should be found.
Title: Re: Voodoo3 card install problem help needed!

 And just one tip: if the Voodoo card have the firmware modified to run on Macs, it won't work on Amigas!

 Do a simple test: put the board on a peecee (XP version is better for this) and hook a monitor on it. It work ok? If so, you have just a contact problem, like Wurzel said.

 If winblows recognize the board, but complain it can can't use the card, you need to re-flash it. Keep it on the peecee and wait further instructions.

All works now and the Voodoo Card has been recognized by my Amiga.

The point is that step 3) of Elbox Voodoo and Picasso96 Installation document needs to be skipped!!!

Please install the Picasso96 graphic system following its
documentation. Choose Cybervison 64 3D as the graphic card.

After the Picasso96 installation, please start Picasso96 installation
once again and choose the "Update an installed version". Select only
"Monitorsettings" and choose the frequency supported by your monitor.

After successful installation you need to:

1. Find the CVision3D and CVision3D.info in the DEVS:Monitors
   drawer, rename these files to Voodoo and Voodoo.info, respectively.

2. Change in the tool type window of Voodoo.icon:
   BOARDTYPE = from CVision3D to Voodoo.

3. Copy the enclosed Voodoo.card driver to the Libs:Picasso96 drawer. :rtfm:

4. Click to the Voodoo icon (in Devs:Monitors drawer).

5. Start the Picasso96Mode program (in SYS:Prefs drawer) and select
   Attach setting to Board0: Voodoo.
   Exit Picasso96Mode by SAVE.

I read your plight earlier & wanted to help. I use to have a link to a Polish site that read in English on just how to do this. This was the link that had explicit instruction on how to set your mediator up everytime without issues. I was hoping it was just down briefly, but it appears to have died for good!  :-(

http://ext.neostrada.pl/index.shtml.htm

Needless to say, I have a hard copy here & it`s taken me a while to find the darn thing. It was sent to me some years ago by a Guy from Austalia; Henry if I recall correctly. :-)
Perhaps I should get my finger out & type this documentation up to re-host it somewhere! Meantime, I include settings for your Voodoo card. Go to DEVS:Monitors & Right Click your renamed CVision3D (voodoo) icon & select Information from the WB Menu.
On the Tool Types TAB, make sure the Window has the following:

SettingsFile=SYS:Devs/Picasso96Settings
BoardType=Voodoo
BorderBlank=YES
DisplayChain=YES
FakeNativeModes=NO
FontsFix=NO
GrantDirectAccess=NO
IgnoreMask=YES
MemoryClock=188
NoBlitter=NO
NoPlanar2ChunkyBlits=NO
OverClock=YES
BigSprite=NO
Quiet
SoftSprite=NO
System2ScreenBlits=YES
BigSprite=NO

Anything other than above could be removed without issues. There may also be other tooltypes that can run in conjunction with the above.

RE Overclocking

The Voodoo driver from Version 2 onwards allows you to overclock your Voodoo card. The ToolType for this is the "MemoryClock" option. If you comment this out thus, (MemoryClock) the Voodoo driver will automatically select the speed which is correct for your card. Heres the Science:

Voodoo Banshee  -  125Mhz Initially
Voodoo3 2000    -  125Mhz Initially
Voodoo3 3000    -  166Mhz
Voodoo3 3500    -  183Mhz
Voodoo3 3500SE  -  200Mhz
Voodoo4 4500    -  166Mhz
Voodoo5 5500    -  166mhz

Be sure you have adequate ventilation when overclocking. Unless you`re running FPS games on your miggy, there should be no real need to Overclock the Voodoo. ;-)

Well done getting there, it can be quite a frustrating thing to setup corectly. Should be fantastic now it is tho!

All the Best,

Kin  :-)

Can the amiga even use all the voodoo 3 potential ? Yet alone would you gain anything by overclocking it ?  Or would this perhaps affect all of the mediator DMA

As for installing the voodoo i never had any problems i always felt the elbox readme was very good .
