I don't get the love for BBSs.  I ran one back in the day, but I always thought these kind of discussion boards are the modern equivalent.

But putting up a BBS isn't going to revive the sense of community that existed back then.  It was a different time.  Without the community a BBS is just a poor CMS/Forum.
