#amiga.org has moved to irc.zirc.org
« on: February 05, 2006, 12:25:45 AM »
Due to unending and often terminal problems with the Webchat IRC network, we have moved the #amiga.org channel to irc.zirc.org (more info below.) This network is similar to Webchat in that it offers all the services our members make use of; but it has none of the stability issues (touch wood.) Also, it does not have the forced default modes which made doing things like private chat sessions more difficult than they need to be.

Our members have discussed the idea of moving the channel pretty much since it opened in 2002, due to the comparatively poor quality of the network. Although it did at one point seem to be getting more reliable, recently it has been worse than ever. The list of problems now is so numerous and our hopes of future improvement have been shattered... It's time to get the heck out of there.

A number of different networks have been suggested for the move. The decision to go with ZiRC was made by the operators for the above reason. It seems to be what we thought Webchat was. There are nick and channel services, so no need for bots or such. It's a relatively small network which also has it's advantages.

Naturally, the discussion regarding a better network for the channel is not closed. If there is a compelling reason why we should have picked a more popular server then we will pick up and move again. But at least now we can have that discussion (and others) in a stable environment.

Connecting to #amiga.org on ZiRC

You can either use the CGI interface (which is the same software as the old interface) via:
http://ajk.daug.net/amiga/irc.php

Or you can connect using IRC client software...

Server: Use one of the following:
Code: [Select]
- irc.zirc.org
 - eu.zirc.org
 - us.zirc.org

(A list of more localised servers can be found here: http://www.zirc.org/servers/)

Use a port between 6660-6669, or 7001 for an SSL connection.

When connected enter this command:

Code: [Select]
/join #amiga.org
...and ask if you need help registering your nick or anything else (more information on such things is available in our updated channel faq: http://ajk.daug.net/amiga/faq.php)

We look forward to seeing all our existing members and newcomers at our new home.  :-)
