A Dumb MessyDos question
« on: September 28, 2004, 11:36:59 PM »
I'm tring to install a new Harddrive in a P200 mhz
pc and am having problems.
The drive isn't being assigned a letter.
Bios reconizes the drive correctly but it doesn't
assign it as 'C' drive (no other HD's in system)
I thought Bois was supposed to assign any new drive
a letter.
FDISK says its a 'NonDOS' disk.
I can't format it with Format "C", I get an error
'Invalid drive specifacation'.
I've went through BIOS setup several times.

What am I doing wrong ?????

Under FDisk you need to delete any non-dos Partitions and create a new (Dos) one.

If it doesn't let you it's worth trying Linux FDisk instead, as that allows better control over the raw partition info.

If you still can't get anywhere it's probably broke :-(

EDIT: As with Amigas, once partitionned you'll need to reboot and format it!

The drive is good... I pulled it from my other PC.
It was a backup drive in the other machine.

I think it must be a BIOS setting I'm missing.......
But what ??

The BIOS does not assign drive letters to drives.  You need to create partition(s) on it using FDISK.  Once you create the partitions, and assign drive letters to the partition(s) then you can format (after a reboot).
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

as holley said... you need to delete the ndos partition using fdisk, and then you create a new one in fdisk.

It wont show up as C unless it is partitioned as a fat disk.

I knew it was a Dumb thing  :-D

I had the Boot sequence set as " A,C,CD Rom" :-)
It should be "C,A,CD ROM".......
I must have looked at it at least 10 times but it
just didn't register ......... :-D
