500Mhz AGP graphics G4 upgrades
« on: April 05, 2013, 08:05:12 AM »
I have a 500Mhz AGP graphics G4 that I want to use as a next gen Amiga, and am  looking  for some help with upgrades before I register morph OS  .

I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with prepping power macs for morph OS.

Can I use the faster CPU's I see on e bay in  morph OS power mac?
what the fastest i can use?

3rd party CPU-cards exist from various companies (Sonnet,Nevertech, etc).

The fastest for OSX use would be 2x1.8GHz single 2.0GHz models also exist.

Most common are Sonnet Encore single-CPU cards with 1.6-1.8GHz. Those can still fetch upto 150Euro on EBay.

500MHz-AGP suggests a DualG4 "Gigabit", those came with ATI-Rage GFX which isn't really that much fun under MorphOS (no 3D) so you might also want to look for a Radeon9xxx with atleast 64MB.

Tip:
Buying a complete PMac that allready has a CPU-upgrade and comes with a decent GFX-card on EBay might end cheaper than just buying the CPU !!!

If you don't want to spend that kind of money:
- get a descent GFX card for that 500MHz G4, will make a quite useable system

- buy a stock "QuickSilver" or "MDD/FW800" PowerMac with good (supported) GFX card and 800-1430MHz (priced between 40 and 120Euro)
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

I would add another 2cents: buying a slow PowerMac G5 (1.8 or 2 Ghz) may be cheaper than upgrading an old powermac G4 or buying an accelerated one.

Does MorphOS now support G5 machines? Awesome! :)

I checked morphos.de, but no mention there. Where did you get this info & how do I get the updated version?

Interesting..didn't know it was possible..Are people using older Macs for this kind of fun?
I might dump my G4's on Craigslist.  I'm tired of looking at them...

Keep in mind that a 500MHz Power mac probably has a 2X AGP slot.

You're going to need a video card that is keyed for that (or a universally keyed card).

Easier and cheaper just to get a better PPC Mac.

MorphOS 3.2 will probably support G5 machines :-) and probably Radeon 9800 cards. It will be released soon-ish. I would enjoy your powermac as is until 3.2 is released, then I would buy a G5.

I have been saying I would get a powermac forever for morphos. When they finally support g5, I will hey a g5 mac and take the plunge.

I just don't trust that a g4 can emulate very demanding aga games and other classic stuff well...
