Booting MOS on Powermac G4
« on: March 27, 2011, 10:28:47 AM »
I used to have powermac and I remember that in order to boot from Mac OS install CD, powermac had to be equipped with genuine cd-drive with apple firmware. How does it refer to MorphOS?

Probably has nothing to do with the OS, but whether OpenFirmware can see the drive. I think the risk of buying a PowerMac with an incompatible drive is negligible.

Perhaps one of the MorphOS devs can comment?

That's a first time I hear about something like that: I have a Sony dvd drive in a PowerBook and some replacement drive in a Mac mini and had no such issues. Surely if the drive is detected by OpenFirmware, you will be able to boot MorphOS from it. If not, MorphOS can also boot from USB on many Macs or even over network.

This 'feature' affects only  powermac G3/G4 (I think). iBook G3 (white), another example, will not detect hard disk drive unless it has apple firmware in it.
Later models accept all generic PC hd and cd drives.
USB boot? powermac G4 doesn't suport it  AFAIK. Firewire maybe?

Only had a G4 iBook and it had no such problems. Earlier PowerMacs probably don't support USB boot, but they will boot over network just fine.

Got a PowerMac 9500 (pre G3) - boots fine from generic Toshiba CDROM and Pioneer DVDROM.

I currently have a G3 B/W Powermac with a non-Apple supplied hard drive and non-Apple DVD drive. No problems. Had a G4 Quicksilver with similar non-Apple drives and never experienced any OS install or boot issues on that either.

Looking at the link you provided down below, I do remember updating the firmware, but that was AFTER my non-Apple DVD drive was installed and working fine. Was able to boot off CD, etc. Hmm... weird.

As an aside, when I went to perform a fresh install of MorphOS 2.7 on my MacMini, I simply popped the CD in right after I turned on the computer. Never had to hold the C key down. It booted right off! lol

Thanks for replies!!!
Looks like it's only B&W G3 issue.
