Hi all!
I didn't want to hijack Thomas' thread (http://forum.amiga.org/index.php?topic=73661.0) so here is another one about OS 3.1.4 but only (please! ;D) for the purpose of exchanging screenshots/links to screenshots of OS v3.1.4 (possibly in comparison to other versions).
Anyone? :)
Cheers!

Frankly, in terms of the GUI, it doesn't look any different than 3.1, really. Ok, there are a couple of extra buttons in some of the system programs, but that is pretty much about it. This release was not about eye-candy.

There's a screenshot that appears at http://hyperion-entertainment.biz/ (http://hyperion-entertainment.biz/images/stories/OS3.1.4/005.png) which looks like it's using different icons than stock 3.1. Are those included in 3.1.4 or is that a third party icon set?
Edit: "A colorful, professionally designed icon set is included, along with the traditional four-color icons."
Now I just need to figure out how to find it.. Am I blind? I've dug through all the floppy images and the System: partition of a clean install but I can't find them anywhere :P

Insert StorageDisk. Open a shell. Enter:
copy Storage3.1.4:glowicons/#? sys: all
This will overwrite the 4c-icons with GlowIcons.
You can browse the Storage-Disk beforehand, of course. I think gulliver has an install script up his sleeve, which didn't make it into release, because we had no time.
-
Ah, found them!
Yeah, an install script would surely have been more user friendly. It should be part of the regular install script IMO, when you choose what keymaps, locales etc. to install, it should also ask you what icon set to install.

Certainly. However, the existing install script exploded so often in our face that we did not dare to touch it last minute. Sorry folks.

Hi all!
Thanks for the first screenshots but what about screenshots from the prefs drawer? And, of course, of the programs in that drawer? :)
Cheers!

Nice!
Anyone has more? In particular of the prefs. programs?
Cheers!

First part.

Second.

Third.
Changes: Bug fixes (e.g. try RTG-Truecolor setting with ScreenMode and compare to 3.1), cleaned up layout, some enhancements (test screen for ScreenMode). Workbench and ASL preferences have been written almost from scratch.
The rest of the Prefs have been bugfixed, but still do look like their 3.1 counterparts, so I'm not posting shots.

@bubbob42
Thanks a lot! Nice :)
Would you have an example of "An optional upgradeable intuition.library provides off-screen dragging of windows for native and P96 RTG screens.", I'm curious about that! Any other cool stuff?
Cheers!

If you are using the native chip set or P96, you can optionally LoadModule intuition V45 which is not included in ROM. It allows you to partially pull windows out of the workbench screen - by the help of layers V45, which supports this trick since a long time. It does not work with CGFx for reasons we are completely unaware of.
Any other cool stuff?
I afraid 3.1.4 is "all about boring stuff", namely bug fixing. You can finally boot from large harddisks such that the NSDPatch kludge became superfluous. I'm not sure whether this qualifies as "cool", but it certainly qualifies as "one annoyance less". CrossDos and the FFS supports long file names and became a lot faster, the CDFS supports audio tracks, the Joliet and rockridge extensions and the UDF file system, and all file systems are consistenly multi-threaded. Which means that your workbench doesn't freeze in case the file system is involved in a lengthy copy operation. Previous versions of CDFS and CrossDos used to block the workbench.

an icon set is also available if you have registered your serial on hyperion entertainment website today

Boring releases are good. I wish more projects had bug fix-only releases. It seems like the norm nowadays is to always ship new features and new bugs.
-
Hi all!
I found the best features ever ;) Now, it is possible to organise icons by names, alphabetically, and to resize the windows to the size of their contents!!!
Cheers! 8)
