Amiga.org Lifetime Membership Special
« on: March 27, 2012, 05:34:35 PM »
Several months back Amiga.org had continuous slowdown issues so we upgraded to a robust high bandwidth hosting plan to give all members a smooth as silk responsive site. Now we are running a special on limited number of lifetime premium memberships to help share in the hosting charges.

It's a great deal for members because you get a lifetime membership to the site with all that brings for only a one time fee of $30. Normally one year memberships are $20. So please enjoy the site and if you can become a lifetime member and no longer worry about renewals and help keep Amiga.org on net.

To become a lifetime member just click "Feed the kitty" on the lower right. Then pick custom amount and input $30. You're membership will then be upgraded to lifetime status with 24 hours or less. Or you can just send $30 to Paypal address store@discreetfx.com with subject Lifetime Member. Thanks again for the help.

I would much rather see amiga.org pick up some good hosting provider instead. For 49 €/month you could get a dedicated server: i7-2600, 16GB RAM, 6TB HDD storage with 10TB monthly upstream traffic (downstream is unlimited).

No need to beg from the members.

The provider we are using was recommended by Wayne and is working well.

How much is it per month if I may ask?

I find this relevant considering the members are being asked to help funding it.

If you looked into a better hosting deal I would look at it. But as others have mentioned if we knew the hosting cost, especially if we are putting money forward for that.

That doesn't mean other solutions won't be better and cheaper as Piru suggested. There are tons of cheap dedicated servers providers. What is more, with strong dedicated server you can also for example sell hosting, email account (for example pampers.amiga.org, pampers@amiga.org). There is couple of possibilities than asking for donations (but that's the easiest way...)

aah back at this one again. The Infamous hosting costs. I think the truth is they are not paying very much a month, and avoided answering last time this discussion came up. If they are paying as much as it would seem (from the constant asking the users for money), they should look at other hosting options as this site is on a shared server and shouldn't be costing much at all.

The Kitty goal of 40 USD isn't all that high. If that covers costs then it doesn't sound like an expensive hoster to me.

it's pricey for a "shared" host. It's not a lot of money in general though no. According to the "donations" page the last donation was in April 2010 Not sure I trust the information given!

If it isn't a lot of money, then why are the users being constantly asked to pay for the hosting ? I host projects. I pay for it myself - so I don't see why I need to help everyone else with their hosting costs.

Sure have a donations button, but it's like an ask for money operation every couple of months here.

Every serious website uses a dedicated server.  Is it warranted here? (This post is not sarcasm.)

@orb85750

Never mind EC2 and similar services.

@thread

I was always wary of the pre-transition kitty, but I'm also wary of claims of super cheap offshore (from the perspective of the site operators) hosting.

amiga.org is currently hosted here btw - http://www.hostgator.com (which hosts their stuff at theplanet.com - now softlayer.com) - on a shared machine with other sites. They share an ip address with other sites too - such as shebayer.com, bobcesca.com and babystrollerzone.com amongst others. This is already in the realm of what I would call "super cheap" hosting.

Of course you are already a member (just like everyone else has been since they joined, and will be till they leave).

You don't seem to understand the point: Normal yearly membership fee is $20 and if you pay the $30 you don't have to worry about renewals!

:crazy: :lol:
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)
