Holy shιt, ~$2700 without OS, tax, or shipping? What, is it made of powdered unicorn genitals? Does it come with a side order of world peace?

I just can't wait to see some benchmarks, I want to compare it to my Power Mac G5 I got refurbished for $500.

Yea, but you again can't run Amigos, so who wants it?
But...but...they licensed The Name, man! What more do you want?

Who cares about the RAM, every computer has that.

The whole deal maker with the X1000 was "The Power of X!", and "X" is one thing it doesn't have. Without support for multiple cores, support for the add-on XMOS chip, and support for the "Xorro" slot, what's the point of this hardware?
Don't worry, in another two years they'll come out with the X1000x, now with 50% more X!

I'm excited about MorphOS on powerBook, but I'd prefer it on the iBook I already have of course.
Are you sure it won't work? Looks like all of the iBook G4 line have Radeon chipsets, and I thought that was the primary barrier with the 12" Powerbooks.

MorphOS won't work on any macbook/powerbook/ibook.  They have said a future release will work on some powerbooks but it's not out yet.
Right, but I thought we were discussing that future release to begin with.

Isn't it quite obvious? The AmigaONE X1000 is designed to run AmigaOS 4.1 as fast as possible.

The G5 Powermac is designed to run MacOS X.  That's it. OK, maybe it can run linux too, but it wasn't designed for that.
If it's designed to run OS4 you'd think they'd have working OS4 drivers...

Well  no one is forcing you to buy it.
"Nobody's making you buy it": the go-to argument when there's absolutely no other defense for a product. Of course nobody's making me buy it, but that doesn't make it not comically expensive, even by PPC standards.

Quote
As for the motherboard being separate vs. a complete system, that is a business decision made by A-EON.  This is no different than ordering anything else online, except that this is a probably a fairly heavy package, thus probably higher shipping cost.
Uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that exactly the point? People would like to have the option to buy the board so that they don't have to shell out for international shipping for a complete mini-tower system (on top of the already high cost.) Of course A-EON has the prerogative to decide whether they're going to offer that, but it doesn't make them not unreasonable if they decide not to.

"That is a business decision made by A-EON" is exactly like "no one is forcing you to buy it": a statement of the blindingly obvious as though it's somehow a refutation of all criticism. Yes, duh, of course A-EON is within their rights to make the decisions they have - but simply because you have the right to do something doesn't (and never will) make it necessarily a good decision.

I think it would make more sense to compare it with another AmigaOS 4.1 machine, and not a system running a different operating system.
Maybe you do, but $10 says my G5 will smoke an X1000 on any benchmark (except perhaps 3D acceleration) - and I got it for 1/5th to 1/6th the cost of this "limited edition."

If my requirement of a system is to run OS4, then your cheapo G5 will be absolutely useless to me.

(do understand that I'd very much prefer an L1000 (L for Laptop) and that I'd love to have OS4 on my iBook. That's not possible. Nore is OS4 on your G5 possible, for much the same reason.)
And whose fault is that? I'll give you a hint, it starts with H and rhymes with "Tiberian."

Quote from: billt;664459
Hyperion was against porting to Mac PPC hardware  LOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGG before MorphOS was on PPC Macs. The reason they  gave publically was the absence of datasheets, register definitions,  etc. to the public (ie. outside of Apple themselves) for some chips in  Apple hardware. (ie. Apple designed northbridges and such)
http://amigamac.wikispaces.com/
And now that crap is all defined well enough that I'm sitting here running Debian happy as a clam on a Power Mac G5, and there's still no OS4 for PPC Macs.

Quote from: utri007;664456
Funny thing is that most of people who are crying  price here wouldn't buy this, even if price would be 100€
If this thing cost 100EUR, I'd absolutely buy it. But it doesn't, and I won't.

It seems to me that nobody wants to see AOS4 fail more than the people responsible for it.
Zing!

I don't want to see OS4 fail (really I'm just indifferent to it,) I just find it hilarious that a company is asking $2700+ for hardware that would underperform a $300-500 used Mac even if all its hardware were supported by the OS it's intended to run.

The CPU's upgradable? To what? I thought PA Semi was getting out of the PPC business (and fsck you for that, Apple.) Is anybody still doing development on the desktop/workstation side of the POWER architecture?
