Linux Mint 12 Lisa

So has anyone tried the new Mint 12 Lisa distro?

I'd love to hear peoples thoughts on it before i install it in a couple of weeks time (too busy). Are there any better options to upgrade to?

Also hoping this thread will draw attention away from the other new Linux distro doing the rounds.

Also why is this new Mint only 1GB compared to the other one which is a lot bigger?   :confused:

I am not a fan of Mint. I prefer Ubuntu or Open SUSE.

Thinking of installing either Ubuntu or Mint but don't know which is best for me coming from Windows Vista (individual application volume control, codec for every movie format under the sun like m2ts and m4v etc and excellent graphics programs like Paintshop Pro v8.1 and Zoom Player media player superior to VLC)

I may end up just running VICE and UAE and surfing the web with Chrome on Linux but would like to be able to use it more if it is more efficient and responsive kernal wise (and also Linux doesn't get shafted by trojans/viruses at the mere sniff of a TCP/IP connection unlike every version of windows this century :) )

I don't know if they have fixed it but the Linux native VICE runs into a buffer overflow issue with the SID emulation. So it's easier to install Wine and then run the windows version of VICE.
 
Might be fixed though....
 
Take a look at Open SUSE though. It's the free and Novell supported so you do get some Novell security features.

Might be fixed though....
 
Take a look at Open SUSE though. It's the free and Novell supported so you do get some Novell security features.


Sorted in v2.3 I believe. SUSE is more for tinkerers no? Just want to install and go :)

No I wouldn't say it's for tinkerers. Pure Debian is for tinkerers.

all nixes generally can be tinkered with. Just add source and sometimes it can be cooked without.

Depends what source. Sometimes if the source comes from a dodgy batch you can end up cooking a disaster ;)

Me too, been using it since SuSE 5.2 back in '98. It's also the only Linux I have ever bought in big box format, several times over the years.

Well when making a recipe expect a few variables needing a little quick stir. Usually it boils down to what's in your cooking library. so.2 sum up, take a good supply of source, make it in the gcc pot, and you should end up with something like the one I prepared earlier.

Its truly scrumptious.  ;)

I bought Mandrake as a big box version back in 2002. Loved that thing lol.

pclinux os is made for stable ease of use, intead of endless tinkering
(which some love, and thrive on) There is a full monty 4 gig version,
and many smaller ones with specific windomanagers like E17, openbox, kde,
xfce, gnome etc.
These all use synaptic for package management, and fast bfs kernels.

I have a mint 11 installed, a nice ubuntu, but it is klutzy compared to pclinuxos in the daily use category.
