Title: Commodore 64, Amiga are "Back" ... for Suckers?
Post by: VingtTrois on April 08, 2011, 05:41:00 PM
[2316: it's not my personal title!! :) ]

Pining for the days of the VIC-20, Commodore 64 and Amiga 1000? Well, then get a load of this: A company calling itself Commodore USA (really just a couple of old-school computer enthusiasts who bought the rights to the names Commodore and Amiga at fire-sale pricing) have started a company that is going to sell new PCs that look like old Commodore computers. I'm not sure that I'd trust such an enterprise with my credit card information, but those who are nostalgic enough and brave enough to try can now pre-order such machines as the (new) Commodore 64 (costing $250 to $900), the Commodore VIC Pro ($500 to $1200), and the Commodore VIC Slim ($300 to $500). Each features a Commodore-esque all-in-one design, uses PC parts and ports, and runs Ubuntu Linux, though the company promises a Commodore 64 emulator is on the way as well. In the future there will be Amiga offerings too, though also PC-based and not technically related to the classic computers. I guess we'll find out soon enough whether this is a serious concern or just a silly vanity project.

I don't understand why they don't have a proper VIC-20 lookalike.
They already have a breadbin case, might as well get the maximum use out of those molds.

or proper amiga look a-likes.  those black a1000,a2000,a3000 don't resemble amigas just stock computer cases.  "vic" casing was because their supplier already had those Cybernet systems made 4 years ago and cusa are cheap asses.

It is actually much cheaper to get the VIC 20 fans to buy the C64x too, because then you don´t have to stock two colors of plastic. Plus you don´t even know how many will like which model.

(Same problem will be with the X1000 - I bet they will either buy too many white or too many black front-doors for the delfina case. They should have chosen beige right at the beginning - it is the colour that most retroists are used to)

Somehow it is funny how much the outside of a computer matters. It is the things we touch and see, that are more important to us than all the GHz anf TBytes in the world. Few companies are thinking about this.

EDIT: Unfortunately OWB has problems with the edit button. So when later I see that my spelling was bad, I tend to ignore it. So dear readers: thank Timberwolf for saving your eyes today!
