In windows we have shortcuts. can you do the same for WB but when you restart have the shortcuts STILL there? instead of just your default partitions and ram disk?

In Workbench 3.9 this is possible using AREXX.  The Workbench is AREXX enabled to it is possible to leave a icon out on the Workbench that opens a window with a small AREXX script.

By 'leaving out' the icon will be placed on the Workbench but it will also be 'removed' from it's original location.

Actually, it won't.

If you use an directory utility (like Dopus), you'll see that the program and it's icon is still in the original location.

But the Workbench doesn't shows it.

But anyway, what's the point in having access to the icon in the original location, if the purpose to have it in the Desktop, is that when it was in the original location the access to it was difficult ? It's easier now to access it from the Desktop.

By the way, after selecting "Leave Out" from the Icons menu, you need to "Snapshot" the icon in the position you want. Otherwise it'll still be in the desktop, but at some weird location that WB chooses.

But hiding the icon from its original place is quite pointless, isnt it? Especially if one is doing file management from WB it could be useful have all icons displayed.

Why not just use AmiDock or something similar to easily put shortcuts to program?

You can "leave out" icons on your Workbench.  But as someone already said, then it disappears from its original place.  Quite a strange behaviour, perhaps, and caused me a bit of confusion the other day.

You can also sometimes simulate shortcuts by creating a project icon that has the path to the program you want as its default tool.  (It's a trick I experimented with once by putting all the files a game used inside one drawer, and then giving the drawer a project icon that loaded the game from inside the drawer.)

Two questions ;)

Who would like to put icon on desktop like on Windows and end up with ugly mess?

Who would want to do any filemanagment with WB?

If it bothers people that much that leaving an icon out on workbench makes it invisible why dont you just

1-Make a copy of the icon and leave the copy out
2-Make a folder called shortcuts and make icons to leave out on workbench that have a little executable to open up the file you want

though as people said its not a problem it being invisible. If you wish to do file management you can simply click the icon and put it back where it comes from move your files about and then put it back on the desktop. Though your better off using things like diskmaster to do any filemanaging

You can't really do that, without having two of the same icon in the same place with the same filename.  Remember the icon is still in its original place on the disk even when it's left out, it just doesn't show up in the window anymore.  If it has a different name, for instance "Copy of x" it won't be linked to the actual file anymore!

But, I think that shortcut support would be a very easy thing to do.  I can probably do this... soon...

Ok.  Eventually...
