Title: Hello All Amiga Fans (rusty amiga guy NEEDS your help!)
Post by: 3246251196 on March 30, 2006, 07:48:28 PM
Hey, i am new. do not know if any of you know me as i always keep the same name. on AMD Forums too

anyway, i received two free Amigas today. one was a 500 and another was a 500+ with a few games including Lotus III

i also have just bought an A1200 with some nice addons from ebay which is on its way for monday i think.

i have some questions:

1 - i got a hdd with the two amigas: A500-HD+ Impact Series II. i plug it into the side of the amiga but when i boot up nothing happens - it does not have a power or HDD light on it (that is, on the HDD itself) - does it need a power plug too?

2 - my amiga is connected to my small TV via RFG (i think) there is a picture - but no sound.... why?

thankyou guys!!!

1.  Most A500-series side-car hard drive expanders require a separate power supply unless you have a Bigfoot power supply and an appropriate adapter jack instead.

2.  You have to run a cable connection from the sound jacks on the back of the computer to the A520 RF adapter.  If you have a stereo then run the stereo jacks into that instead.

check here (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/) for the hd. at search type A500-HD+ Impact Series II to find the controler. as it says it needs a psu.
welcome to amiga.org :-)

1. It does. (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=1194)
2. Use the Amiga's .audio RFC-jacks (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/download_photos/a500_4_big.jpg) (the -mostly- white and red one) to connect it to the audio-in of your TV-set

woah guys! i thought AMD forums was quick and one of the best. your replies were SUPER quick. thankyou. i have just sorted the audio out i think - L and R Audio into the RFC Audio In port.

and, obviously i didnt get a power pack for the hdd. but, i am only using this 500 until i get my 1200. i love the 1200 computer. i want to use it for some retro C programming though. i am so used to PC now lol. i am not a newbee at PC at all but when it comes to AMIGA i am so rusty haha

anyway thankyou guys! very good people are you!! :D

Well, the prices of big box and wedge Amigas have come alot closer compared to 15-10 years ago, so in a way they're much more affordable =).

Well, I've been decking out my A4000D and it's coming along nicely.  However, for my gaming and playing I use my A1200.  I was using my A1000 until I got the A1200 and I'm waiting on AmigaKit.com to put an accelerator in my A1200.

I'm also slowly working on building up a good A500 but that's a longer term project.

The thing I really like about the A1200 is the ability to use almost all of the old software as well as some of the new.  Also there are tons of upgrade options for the A1200 whether you live it in the desktop case or switch to a tower version.

hey guys. i just tried the audio thing and there is still no sound.

the 500 RFC adapter - the big piece of additional equipment has a port saying AUDIO IN

does one end of the audio cable go into there whilst the two ends go into the L and R channel of the Amiga?

probably the one side must be a middle jack and the other 2 rca red and black or red and white.

-edit-
yes you connected as you say

hmm. its just the one i got from this box is ALL black. do you think that is why. does the AUDIO cable always have to be red and white/whatever colour?

thankyou

not exactly, this combination is an international standard but maybe this cable is hand maded. that can means too that maybe a wire is broken from one side or the other. you can buy one set from a local store for no more than 3 euro, so don't worry a lot for the moment :-) just ask for stereo middle jack to stereo rca.

will do. in fact, there are probo ones in the house. but i have another question based on this...

when i turn up the volume i hear static - when you use RFC you have to tune the tv into a channel do you (and maybe this is why there is no sound - i have tried to change the tuning level but still no luck - its probo the wire but am i right - with RFC you tune in?)

Welcome ! You should test those audio outputs from the Amiga into a normal amplifier. If that works OK, I'd leave it like that as it sounds better ! Otherwise its as simple as it looks, jack plug into audio in, and phono's into back of Amiga. Is this Amiga a UK one ? Just wondering if you are using a PAL B/G instead of 'I' modulator.
Good luck :-)

i don't know what exactly you mean but in general when you shift a channel up or down you shift both video and audio, as for example happens in video tape devices.

Hmm, but yes indeed, you must tune the tv to the A520 modulators output frequency first ! See if that works for audio and video at the same time !

Welcome back and congrats on configuring your new stuff!  I have an A500 HD PSU that I won on eBay.  I was going to offer it up until I saw you were in the UK.  If you decide to let the 500 HD go drop me an email!

I think you'll love the 1200!  I bought one a couple of months ago from your neighbor, AmigaKit.com.  One of the nicest Amiga's I've owned.

Best,

Bob
