Graphics Issues? Greenish pixel's on most blue shades.
« on: September 30, 2009, 04:15:07 PM »
Sorry this isn't Amiga related but i'm trying to help my dad's Windoze Box working correctly. There seems to be an issue that has cropped up overnight and I fear it maybe a graphics card fault.
I have some pictures here:

Screen closeup1: http://i579.photobucket.com/albums/ss235/Solvalu/IMG_3208.jpg

System Spec: http://i579.photobucket.com/albums/ss235/Solvalu/untitled.jpg

DXDiag: http://i579.photobucket.com/albums/ss235/Solvalu/untitled2.jpg

Any help or light on the subject would be great, thanks.

[EDIT] Just noticed blacks/greys are of a yellowish colour too.

In my past experiences, a "graphics card fault", or a faulty gfx-card,
often produce an utterly black screen.
Your problem might be a heat issue, but that's just a guess...
My guess would also depend on whether the green flood appears directly
on start-up, or only if the pc has been running for some time.
intuition inside!

It seems to happen upon start-up, though there doesn't seem to be any visible discoloration to the start-up sequence (XP logo and the mobo model screen).

That's a strange one.
Graphics card fault is a possibility, though I suspect it's probably something more innocent.

Some troubleshooting steps to consider, if you haven't already:
What happens if you change desktop resolutions?  Color depths?
Any Windows updates or ATI video driver updates installed recently?
Also, is the monitor hooked up by DVI or VGA?

Well it isn't the latest drivers though that shouldn't be the issue as 6.12 was working fine for over a year, plus for some reason the newer ones make the system bluescreen (i got 2 and they both do the same in 2 different machines). The monitor is a VGA type if that is of any help?
I tried changing resolutions and colour depths before-hand (16 and 32 bit) but still the same picture.

Is the video connection running via VGA or DVI cable? Have you tried the other? Do 3D modes work?

I suspect a RAM or RAMDAC failure (for VGA) - both non-servicable), probably you're best off looking for a replacement gfx card.

yah, that's fine.  I was just trying to make sure you didn't update the drivers last week and shortly thereafter the problem developed.  If the newest drivers cause your system to blue screen halt, though, that is a bad sign.  There may be faulty or not totally compatible hardware.

That was one of the things I was suspecting, as well.  Shouldn't a faulty video card RAMDAC have caused the visual glitches to manifest differently at different resolutions and color depths, though?

Just for the heck of it, it might be interesting to try a Linux Live CD on the box, just to rule out the chance of it being related to Windows drivers.  Of course, either way, switching the video card would likely cure the issue as Windows would load new drivers upon detecting a different card.  ;-)

Well I have an identical GFX card in my other PC so il see if swapping them makes any diffrerence (tomorrow). Thanks for all the help guys and il let you know how it goes. :)

Well it isn't a hardware fault on the GFX card at least as I have now replaced it with my backup (100% identical) card and still the same outcome. I will try Knoppix CD OS and see how that fairs. I will edit the results on this post a.s.a.p.

[EDIT] Ok it seems to be a Windoze related issue (surprise, surprise), I ran it via Puppy v2.02 (Knoppix wouldn't run) and all the colours on that are pin sharp and correct.

drivers...  personally, my advise would be:

1) Install the Aug 2009 DX9.0c redist from microsoft.com.
2) Go on Microsoft update, install any update it detects for ATI video.
3) Download and install the latest ATI driver package.  (Don't reboot after this step, even if the system asks you to.)
4) Go into device manager, delete everything under Display Adaptors.
5) Now reboot.  Let Windows sort out the drivers, detect the 'new' hardware and pick whatever the heck drivers it feels like.

Sometimes letting Windows have its way is the only way to have a functional install.  ;)

It could also be a simple case of a messed up color profile - try without one and/or reinstall the correct monitor profile.

Managed to fix it now, ATI suddenly came up and decided there is actually something wrong and insisted a re-install. Done that and now its working fine! I think it may have been a corrupted file or driver system.
Thanks guys for your help and input! :)
