Disastrous Installation of MOS3.1
« on: July 15, 2012, 04:45:03 AM »
First of all, please accept my apologies for the previous multiple threads in several forums. I hope this becomes the last of the saga, in the hope of getting the necessary help to resolve multiple issues:

1. System being used: Mac Mini G41.5GHZ, 1 GB RAM, 80GB HDD, Leopard 10.5.8
2. First installed MOS3.0 on June 18. Received MOS key on June 20. Installation successful. Installed morphos.key in System:Devs
3. Encountered minor issues using system, due to lack of knowledge. Received assistance @ morphozone.
4. Installed apps: Grunch, TVPaint, Aminet Radio and 3 Games (Neverball, Foobilliard and Hurrican)
5. Never mixed things up in folders (especially system folders)- I don't know how to that any ways.
6. Attempted to upgrade to 3.1 using "Update Installation" option. Did not work. System was looking for USB drive from wher I first copied morphos/key from.
7. Several attempts failed.
8. Got advice to install from burnt CD with 3.1.
9. 1st attempt failed due to same issue as point 6 above
10. After 3rd attempt managed to installed 3.1 using a complete fresh installation on July 10. Left system on and to go in sleeping mode.
11. System working, re-installed apps in point 4 above on Wed, Jul 10.
12. Powered computer off night of Wed, Jul 10.
13. Computer was turned on again on morning Thu, Jul 11. OWB gave start up messages, so it won't work
14. Re-installed from scratch. Worked fine during the day. Powerd off and turned back on Friday, Jul 13. Same problems again as in point 13 above.
15. Same occurrences on Sat, Jul 14. First re-installation of the day didn't work (PowerDsl libary was installed but found by games I was trying to reload. Re-installed again from scratch to delete all previous data and avoid overwrites (I always did between installations)
System is now working again and I've only installed Grunch and Neverball to get PowerDsl embedded in game. Game plays.

16. I WON'T POWER OFF UNTIL I RECEIVE HELP FROM A GOOD SAMARITAN. I know if I did, I will get have the same problem over and over again. I'M TIRED AND I NEED HELP.

Thank you for your patience and pls understand that I'm not a power AmigaDOS user. My experience is only with PC's for 25 years. Last time I owned an Amiga was 20 years ago.
Amiga 1200 fully loaded by Aclii.

I don't understand, you say "OWB gave start up messages, so it won't work". OWB is a web browser, for it to give startup messages, MorphOS must be up and running already. What is it that wont work?

Yeah, I'm having trouble understanding the problem as well.

Because that's the problem...what it's happening here doesn't make any sense!

The bottom line is that the upgrade to 3.1 screwed my system up, and it can be restored to the way it was before the installation of 3.1.

BTW, thank you all for clarifying that OWB is an Internet browser; that explains why I was using it before to surf the net.

Again, the "start up messages" pop up right after booting up while attempting to launch OWB (yes, the web browser :smack: )

Running fresh installations of, either 3.0 or 3.1, would not solve the problems.

Today I ran fresh install of 3.0 and 3.1 and with both, I get a successful installation message at the end. System works OK, but this is also relative, because at times, I'm asked to install extra stuff that was not originally installed, such as PowerSDL.library and other X,powersdl.library needed to install Hurrican, for example).

So far, OWB is working after the last installation, and besides that, I've only installed Grunch and the game Neverball & Neverputt (becuase it comes with PowerSDL.library). Something tells me, that if powered the computer off, I will start over with this vicious cycle of things not working, until I do a new installation.

In case it is not clear, I cannot run a fresh new installation everyday just to squeeze a few ours of use until it craps out again.

So what you're saying is that OWB wont work after a reboot? Exactly what startup messages are there when it doesn't work?

@WeiXing3D

As has been suggested to you in your duplicate thread over at morphzone.org, since installing Mac OS X doesn't work either, these mysterious and weird problems you describe are probably due to faulty hardware, most certainly the hard drive.

(And the next time you need help, it would help if you give a detailed description of the problems instead of just "ranting away". You seem to always leave out at least half of the necessary info to make room for that rant, which is only counter productive.)
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

It does sound like a faulty hard drive. Try another one and let us know what happens.

6. Attempted to upgrade to 3.1 using "Update Installation" option. Did not work. System was looking for USB drive from wher I first copied morphos/key from.
7. Several attempts failed.
8. Got advice to install from burnt CD with 3.1.
If you boot your MorphOS 3.0 CD and upgrade to MorphOS 3.0 you get MorphOS 3.0, not MorphOS 3.1. To upgrade MorphOS to a new version you must boot from the correct CD (in this case MorphOS 3.1) and then choose Install and Upgrade.

That likely explains your issues at that stage.

The other issues sound more like hardware problems. I'm fairly confident in stating this since if such problems were common in 3.0/3.1 we'd get much more reports about them.

I have a strange problem when I installed the 3.0 with a clear installation and the USB Poseidon and I have installed the 2.7 as the first time, now with my MorphOS2.7 and the main partition of 2GB because the 2.7 did it of 700MB, well, with the 2.7 instead of to do a clear installation I did the update to 3.1 and except to the battery that now I haven't the date save, the MorphOS 3.1 hasn't problems in my Mac Mini, but I have installed in exclusive I don't have other OS in this Mac Mini, ni MAC OS netiher Linux, I hope help you, perhaps install first the 2.7 and update, in my case the Poseidon problems have dissappered but with a clear installation I don't know if now I'm speak to merry.
