A better 800x600
« on: March 31, 2010, 02:44:48 PM »
I am advocating for a better 800 x 600 screen mode for people who have an AGA / ECS Indivision. Why? because the one you get by using the old Amiga modes ( think this super hi res something ) does not upscale through the Indivision hardware well.

800x600 gives a good size screen but will be noticeably more responsive then the HighGfx mode of 1024x768. Wondering if any one else has come to this conclusion, need for  a better 800x600 screen mode.

Could the HighGfx driver be modified? Other ideas?

Isn't there a Super72 screenmode at 800x600 that works on an Indivision? I've tried some (there are many versions on Aminet) and none worked for me, but I remember someonespoke about it.

Yeah, that's the one I mean, It does not work very well here...
Most anything does, Multiscan, DblNTSC, etc.

Have you tried it?

I think there are many of us who want a better 800x600, and from what I have read elsewhere, this is targeted for the nest update :-)

I have tried 800x600 with Super72, but I only managed to get about the same resolution as 1024x768, only with huge black borders.

but it depends on individual computers to include such a mode to the next firmware.

I've been eagerly awaiting the 1280x1024 and 800x600 drivers since Ratte first told us it was possible. Let's hope we can finally use them with the next firmware update, bring it on!

Also, I'd love to see an OCS/ECS Amiga running in 800x600 in 16 colours, it can look quite nice and modern with a good palette and a small selection of visual enhancement patches on Workbench.

Why not use a  pal hi res PAL interlaced with overscan?  Gets pretty close to 800x 600, and the Indi will scan double the interlace ans should be quick too?

The Super72 is already a 31Khz (or close) screen so the Indivision is probably just letting it pass through. It also explains why it gets slow.

Hey Ratte, how is this going? Will we ever be able to use this wonderful 800x600 mode on our Indivision AGAs and ECSs?

Does anyone know how to get the SuperPlus? Just bought an ECS indivision, hoping I could use 800x600 8bit, can't seem to get anything working, HighGFX, Super72, etc?

Hey Goose,

How does the HighGfx on the Indivision mode compare to running DblNTSC
on a regular RGB-VGA adaptor speed wise?. I remember DblNTSC being slower
on an 030/AGA but it was fine for Octamed and programs that let you choose screen modes.

HighGFX is pretty quick, especially when you're running FBlit. Here is a video of me running some programs on Workbench on an A1200 030/50 in 1024x768 HighGFX mode:

Sorry there's no sound, YouTube couldn't recognize any of the audio codecs I tried using when I uploaded the video three times in a row trying to get it to work.

Ratte is the author of the SuperPlus monitor driver V40.2 that is a new monitor driver, which is a work in progress. It features a new ECS/AGA Driver with 800x600 70ns mode, and is about 70% faster than Super72 in 256 Colors. It can provide support for ECS at 800x600 in 16 colors out of 4096, and is also interesting for the AGA-chipset, because it uses the "HiRes"-mode with 70ns instead "SuperHiRes" with 35ns pixelclock.
The display-DMA is not that heavy loaded like in Super72 and display operations are faster.

Get it from the Unofficial BoingBag #4 for AmigaOS 3.9 available from http://lilliput.amiga-projects.net/Files/BoingBag39-4.lha

BTW if you are wondering, it does work on 3.1 :)
