How to pick a LCD TV for Amiga
« on: May 20, 2015, 09:18:49 AM »
I have a question to those using their belowed Amiga with a LCD screen. How do you connect it? Are you using Component, SCART or VGA input?

I'm about to buy a second hand Samsung TFT TV to replace aging 1084S. Unfortunately, I don't have the model number but it is a 15" 4:3 aspect ratio, 1024x768 TV. It posses Scart, VGA, Component, S-Video and RF inputs. I wonder if I can directly connetct it via VGA cable. Do I need scandoubler or filcker fixer?

P.S.: We are talking about stock Amiga 500 & 600

Do the specifications state it can sync to 15.7KHz, or only as low as 31KHz?

The first number was tbe old TV 320 x 240 (320 x 263 PAL) non-interlace standard, the latter is VGA or 640 x 480 (576 PAL) if I recall correctly.

Dell made until recently monitors such as the ST2420L that sync'd as low as 15.7 KHz, had VGA, DVI, and HDMI inputs and a top resolution of 1920 x 1080

Specification says it is a Standart Definition (480p/480i) TV. Does it mean 15.7 kHz?

@ Zombie

There're a number of modern PC monitors that can handle 15Khz signals, although the specifications state that they only can sync down to 31Khz. For example the BenQ BL702A 17" LCD monitor can handle all Amiga screen resolutions. PAL Hires (640x256) gives a rock solid picture without any distortion! Just look at this thread:

You don't even need an scandoubler/flickerfixer anymore! No more hacking on your precious Miggy!

Note the "i" in 480i stands for interlace which is what a high res Amiga screen puts out, so Yes, it will take that as input and show flicker at 15 kHz.

Here is a better explanation: http://emulation-general.wikia.com/wiki/Display_FAQ

The scart connection should work nicely, and possibly de-interlace too. If the VGA connection works at 15KHz, then that would be an added bonus. It's a case of suck it and see really.

So it seems that the BenQ BL702A is not available in north America. Any other decent options? now that I have two A4000's I need a second LCD monitor.
Amiga 2000HD Indivision ECS
Amiga 4000D towerised OS 3.1 and 3.9 on CF cards
Indivision AGA, Mediator 4000
Video Toaster 4000 Flyer v4.3 Millenium.
202gig of video drive space & 5gig audio.

Indivision ECS is available for both those models for under $100 USD and makes connecting to any modern LCD a snap.  Plug-and-play.   Also adds new screenmodes like 800x600x16 colors.  My A500 is connected to a 37" Vizio LCD TV and my A2000 to a 20.1" Dell "UltraSharp" monitor.  I couldn't be happier with both. Have also hooked up to all different kinds of monitors, projectors, etc.   It's 2015, why mess around with old standards like Component or SCART?

*Disclaimer - in the US I've never in my life seen a SCART connector.  Never even heard of it before a few years ago, LOL.  ;)

I have a 4 LCD-TVs, three of them works just fine with Amiga, fourth one doesn't flicker fix. I use that one with Commodore 64.

One thing to make choosing more easy, it that if TV has a two SCART inputs, one of them is almost 100% sure a RGB. If there is only one SCART input, it has a big change to have only Component SCART.
