Seems MS are getting on their game. Footprint on my VM of Windows 10 is 13Gb whereas Windows 7 with all the updates (which took two days!) is about 23Gb.
-
Those are identical installations otherwise?
I have a small Win10 installation here that is 21 GB, on a real machine.

Interesting observations. If we were talking Workbench Installs would we be including our programs, work and data, virtual memory on hard disk, recovery (backup) partitions or resume files in our OS Footprint? I'm guessing not.
These days the Windows Partition for Win10 on a normal install is 4.2 GB (on disk). With a default Windows Program Files size of less that 2GB. Thats on a Bitlocker encrypted c:/ drive.

I just checked; the 'Windows' folder is reported as 15,3GB in size, with the 'WinSxS' folder inside holding 8,3GBytes, in almost 100.000 files...
I think 'WinSxS' is kindof linked together and the reported size could actually be wrong, but i am no expert. :o

A few small programs installed like McAfee, WinUAE and Amiga Forever but nothing massive like Office.
You can run Disk Cleanup as Administrator then can be rid of upgrade files if that is the difference here.

Yes, that shaved off a few gigs. But Windows 10 will eventually grow just like Windows 7 was, when it gets older.

My 6 year old W7 install on my SSD's with pagefile, temp and download files moved from the SSD. with all software installed, games on seperate disks. My setup is 90gigs large...
Windows folder itself is 30gigs.

Dont forget about driverstore. Windows keeps all old drivers installed.
I couldn't workout why my install was 50GB. Driverstore had 10 GFX drivers, each 500MB+, same for sound drivers. Once cleaned those, regained 30GB.

And Nvidia keeps duplicates in C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Installer2 !!

Yes, Microsoft has made significant improvements in optimizing the operating system's footprint with Windows 10 compared to its previous versions like Windows 7. The reduced footprint results in a smaller installation size and better performance on devices with lower storage capacity, such as tablets and laptops with solid-state drives (SSDs).
Furthermore, Microsoft has also made efforts to optimize Windows 10 for virtual machines, making it easier for users to create and manage virtual environments. This is particularly useful for developers and IT professionals who need to test software or configurations in a controlled environment.
