I'm assuming you need to have a hacked Wii operating system to use this?

I have an extra Wii with a broken DVD drive.  Hard drive and unit works fine otherwise.  Without the drive, is it still useable for modding into an emulation game system or media centre (for Media stored on USB/Smart cards)?
